Does anyone know if it's possible to ship a suitcase full of stuff to Canada from Korea, or do I have to pack everything in boxes?
I'll be travelling for awhile after my contract and won't be able to lug around my stuff. I want to send winter clothes and maybe some books. I could send it in boxes I guess, but I'd hate to just give up the 2 big suitcases I bought last year, just to have to buy new ones the next time I travel. |

My ex-housemate looked at doing this but ended up concluding that she'd have to get a box big enough to fit the suitcases in. She ended up sending her suitcases home with friends who came to visit and boxing everything else. I'm not sure how thoroughly she investigated her options, but there wasn't a simple answer from the post office.
Good luck and let us know if you work out how. |

I'd pack everything in boxes and send it home via sea parcel. Then I'd sell the suitcases through this site's buy & sell forum. You can always pick up new or used suitcases back home.
I say this because I bought my two suitcases 8 years ago in a second-hand shop for about 10 bucks total. They're still going strong. But when one or both give out or I have to dump one or both, I know where I'll get the replacement(s). |

Hi,
I sent a large suitcase home last year. I'm looking at the reciept now (I still have the reciept for some reason... haha).
The weight was 14 Kilos and it cost 20,000 won to ship from Korea, Jeollanamdo to the USA.
I also shipped four 19 kg boxes at the same time for 48,000 won each, so it was cheaper to ship the suitcase for some reason. I'm not sure why. I'm definately shipping suitcases next round! |

Hi MissT~ Thanks for the info.
Could you let me know how you went about doing it? Did you just go to a local post office? |

Yes, we went to the post office with several boxes and the one suitcase that I had pre-weighed all to be under 20 Kg... but when I got there I found out I couldn't use the boxes that I had packed and ended up repacking everything right in the local post office. They were really nice. Unfortunately my underwears and such were being moved into the large post office boxes by the staff! haha!
EDIT: I shipped everything surface... slow boat. It took about 2 months to arrive home. |

Heh, that's Korea for you. Some places/people will do things, others won't. I would say don't leave it til the last minute in case you hit a snag with your post office. |

How big was the suitcase you shipped home? Did you have to put it in a box from the post office, too? |

Well, that was in 2008. It was a big 'checked' bag type. I can't remember the dimensions, that particular bag is in my attic back home. I do remember it was a bit 'shorter' than my other large suitcases. I didn't put it in a box. The post office just tapped the shipping label to the outside.
In 2009, I tried to ship a suitcase back again. This was one of my 'large' suitcases, taller than the other one I sent the previous year. The post office wouldn't ship it because it exceeded their dimension limits.
Sorry, this info is a bit dated. If anyone else has done this recently or knows anything let us know! |
