I'm just now getting my documents gathered for Korea. I have my diploma and transcripts (not yet notarized), and my passport photos. I haven't yet arranged for my background check, which I hope to do tomorrow. Since it includes a Vulnerable Sector check as well and it's being done by the RCMP (national police, not municipal), I heard that the process will take longer than usual. Then, I have to factor in the time of sending my documents to the Korean consulate two separate times, etc. I'm hoping that, altogether, the process of getting my visa and a position with a school will not take longer than two months, enabling me to start teaching by the beginning of May.
I've read that, however, the February-April and August-October periods are primarily when the hiring is done. So, is May not a good time to apply to private schools? I know that private schools still hire year-round, off-season notwithstanding, but my worry is that there will be many fewer positions in May. Another concern is if there is a higher likelihood of those May positions having suddenly arose due to outgoing teachers breaking their contracts with dissatisfactory schools.
TL;DR Am I at a real disadvantage intending to start in May? Is waiting to apply for Korean summer camp positions the better option? |

Really? That's good to know. I read on one of the recruiters' sites that Canadians, in particular, needed a VSS.
Edit: I applied for a background check yesterday, and asked for a VSS just in case, since I was told that it would not substantially add to the processing time. Altogether, it will be ready in a week, which is awesome. I was hearing estimates of three to four weeks from some sources. |
