It doesn't say 2000 EXTRA new teachers.
They could just be replacements.
If more than 2000 left then that is a net decrease.
Also not all provinces are equal. I am sure Seoul and Gyeonggido are shrinking their programs but not all other provinces overdosed on NET's. |

Isn't it saying there'll be about 2000 NETs, of which 800 are new and 1200 either re-signing or transferring? |

Which, no doubt, is why a number of us long-timers all of a sudden got treated like dirt. |

It's not that they want qualified people or anything. They are literally just waiting this whole English-speaker in the classroom fad out. The government will eventually change its mind and then they'll go on as if none of these English shenanigans have ever existed. Even if it does take 10-15 years. They'll wait us out.
Enjoy those contracts while you gots 'em. |

My co-teacher said this budget cutting this is just temporary for two years, and they'll start hiring again in 2 years.
I don't know why they're cutting us. We all know Korea's economic situation isn't the greatest right now, so that could be it. Or because they wanna level the playing field and give kids equal oppurtunity, since the schools in the rural areas aren't getting cut. Or it could be because they think we're not effective (but not realizing it's because we're expecting to have 'fun' with the class and are under pressure from the folks above us, including usually a vindictive co-teacher). Maybe it's a combination of both reasons. |

I think Koreans finally realize that English is not really necessary for all students. I think they should make English as an elective class. |

Not really, Korean students WANT to be in English classes. They are very envious of their friends who go to hagwons. Most of them DON'T WANT to learn English, once they find out that it isn't easy as it seems. However, they don't want to give up their English classes, no way! It is such a status symbol and a power trip, it's impossible to give up for them. |

I find it hard to believe that many students want to be in English classes.
(at least after Gr 5 elementary)
Maybe some students want to be there, but I'd say the driving force behind it
is parents. There is a notion that students will need English to get good
jobs as adults, whether or not this is true is arguable. But the perception
that English is necessary is very strong. |

Rich Parent: Hello there Bob
Poor Parent: Hey Joe, how are things?
Rich Parent: Ok, looks like we will have to hire a private English tutor. They only charge 50,000/hour.
Poor Parent: We got our child 4 lessons a month at a language school (10,000/hour with some Filipino).
Rich Parent: 4 lessons? You must be rich.
Poor Parent: yea, we save our money.
Like 2 blind ships, they know nothing. Face it guys, we are going through a cycle. Rich people have money, DUH. Poor people don't, DUH.
When government realizes this = more money for use to teach the downtrodden and poor child. Something to much on folks, yo wee yo!!!! |

Yes, what they do is, they come to English classes, don't participate, disrupt students that are learning, then complain that teachers are boring. And when and if only when a fun teacher comes they'll learn.Well, they don't want to learn, they just want to be there, because their friends are there. Don't you know that it's so 쪽팔여 to be seperated from your friends? Note that I'm talking about public school students.
And yes, even if english is made an elective or have classes distributed based on ability, Tiger Ajumma would push, push, push and wreck it anyway. |
