I want to buy some really good jeans. Like ones made with Japanese denim (heavy/raw/selvage).
I don't want Levi's, Diesel or Evisu as everyone wears these or cheap knock-offs of these brands. I want something a bit more special.
Can anyone direct me towards brands/shops I can get in Korea. I live in Busan, but I'm making a trip to Seoul soon.
Cheers. |

I had a pair of Lucky brand jeans from home that lasted 6 years without so much as a stitch loose, but after three cycles in a Korean washing machine they were in tatters. Good luck.
For the money, Giordano jeans aren't a bad bargain...pretty basic but for everyday wear they're fine. |

You can get APC's at the Galleria in Apguejeong, but they cost about double what you would pay if you bought it online. Don't think APC ships to SK. Around 279,xxx - 320,xxx
Uniqlo also has a raw denim, selvage jean thats made in Japan on a antique loom, but only select shops carry them. Also might be sold out.
If you're looking for Japanese denim, best bet is Apguejeong and Cheongdam |

Thanks for the info - I'll check it when I go to Seoul.
I had considered getting some online, but these would be my first selvage jeans, so I need to try them on first before I splash that much cash... |

Just walk around Myeongdong, they have tons of jean shops. I think they have a G-Star Raw store there. |

If you plan on buying APC's, you can find measurments on the context clothing webstore site. With APC's, if you want them tight, size down 3-4 from your normal size, if you want a regular fit, size down 1-2. APC's stretch a ton after a few weeks.
good luck |

I will have to echo this post.
Since it looks like you're getting into denim, you might want to start with APC. I remember a couple of years ago, they were 180,000 won for a pair at Galleria but I'm sure they've risen in price a great deal as they have elsewhere. Uniqlo also has a decent pair of denim at a great price.
I just came back from Japan last weekend and picked up a pair of Studio D'Artisan denim. Cost me a great deal but over the lifetime, it doesn't come out to much considering how much I wear denim. |

I bought a pair of Tabloid News jeans when I was in Japan. I have to admit the main reason why I bought the jeans were because I had never seen the brand before, it was Made in Japan and the pair fitted me really well. No idea if they are actually considered good jeans or not. However, I liked them a lot and wore them pretty much every day until they wore out. They lasted as long as my regular brand jeans from the west do. No idea where to buy them. Searching for "Tabloid News" on the internet is a little difficult since the phrase is so commonly used and the pages which does sell them are mostly in Japanese.
EDIT: Found their website: http://www.newslabel.com/ |

I had the same issue recently and was surprised at how difficult it is to find decent denim in Seoul. After a year in Japan with easy access to all things Samurai, Skull, Sugarcane etc. I couldn't believe that there's nowhere here selling similar products, especially considering how close Japan is - it's actually easier to find the above mentioned brands in the UK I think.
But anyway, after a few weeks of fruitless searching I ended up getting a pair of Nudies (their Japanese redline selvedge 'Grim Tim' model) from their store in Gangnam called Cultizm and I'm happy with them. Nudies sometimes get a bad rep but the denim these are made from seems pretty good.
I was in 건대입구 (Konkuk University station) yesterday and passed a shop that had a sign saying "Imported Japanese denim" but it was on the 2nd floor and as I was rushing I didn't have a chance to look inside - I'll check it out when I'm there again sometime this week or next. If you come out of exit 5 and turn right so that you're walking opposite Star City Lotte and with the main road on your left, I think it's the first street on the right hand side - the shop is a little way down on the right. It's the same street with Adidas, Nike, Puma, North Face etc. Apologies if you go there and there's nothing inside though - as I said, I didn't have a look yet. |

From a news expose I saw, the Evisu stores in SK are Korean knockoffs and are not related to the Japanese label. |

I think the Korean Evisu is legit as they have stores inside some of the big name department stores here, but the product range is definitely very different to what you'd find in Japan. I spoke to one of the sales assistants at the Evisu store in Coex and she said that the products they sell are from the "Evisu Korea" range, and similarly there is an "Evisu Europe" range too - unfortunately it seems like they don't stock any of the original Japan range though... no #1 or #2 denim to be had here! (at least, not from the official Evisu stores anyway....) |

I generally thought seeing the brand name store in a Korean department store means it's legit but it doesn't apply to Evisu here. I found the news clip here:

The Evisu Myeongdong sales assistant in the news expose says something about an Evisu Korea range as well - it's probably what they are trained to say. In the clip, however, the Japanese Evisu employees say the company doesn't market in Korea at all and are aghast at what they find in an Evisu department store shop in SK.
In the clip they interview the man who registered the Evisu brand in SK and he says that the similarities between the Japanese and Korean Evisu name and trademarks are coincidence - the seagull-shape on the back pocket is actually Korean mountains and the Ebisu god can be found on Korean liquor bottles.
The Myeongdong Uniqlo is legit, tho! |

Either way, Evisu hasn't been relevant in years. |

WOW. I stand corrected!! In any case, the Evisu for sale in Korea is hideous anyway so hopefully nobody would buy it thinking they're getting the real deal
And... there's nothing wrong with (Japanese) Evisu!! The oversized gulls etc. look pretty tacky now (or maybe they always did?) but if you can get some plain pocket or hand-painted pocket #1 denim it's all good!! |
