Related MA / PhD, published and presented? Sure.
BA (or unrelated MA) and a TEFL = not likely.

You mentioned having a Ph.D in another thread and I just don't think that will get you more money or put you at an advantage.
Most Korean universities aren't sure how to regard foreign teachers with doctorates. Just take a quick glance at the university job postings and 99% of them only state salary scales for B.A. or M.A. holders. This is because universities here have no salary scale or rank for foreign doctoral holders. In fact, the very few people with doctorates whom I've worked with have been regarded in the same way as those with B.A. and M.A. degrees in terms of salary, job title and being on a limited term contract.
Frankly, you've lost your f@cking mind if you're planning on doing a doctorate just to teach EFL as a contract instructor at a Korean university.

The uni I work at (outside of Seoul, but still in a small/medium sized city) pays 2.7 for 12 hours a week (4 days) for masters qualified with about 4 months off a year.
No airfare as they only employ those in country and accommodation provided, no stipend option. |

overall, nope because nobody is paying airfare anymore
Housing, some are giving small housing allowances (I get 400k/month) but those are few and far between
The number of univs that even get you to 3 mill with housing I can count on my hands.
Contact hours are also going up because in addition to say 12 hours of actual teaching many univs are requiring you to spend 3-4 hours/week in their "English Lounges"if not also teaching non-credit classes
Finally the amount of Korean supervision/standardization of foreign teachers has increased dramatically. A number of univs are making teachers teach a standardized curriculum developed without their input, requiring standardized testing etc. The days of the univ teacher being free to design their own curriculum etc and do some really innovative things is starting to fall by the wayside
The one decent thing (for now) is the vacation is still there for many of the schools but we are waiting for that shoe to drop. My money says in 5 years you will see either vacations going partially unpaid or a desk warming requirement be put in |

Did unis in Korea ever offer airfare? I've been here since '01 and been teaching uni since '05 and I've never heard of unis offering airfare to foreign teacher. In-country hires have always been the norm, meaning no need to pay airfare, for as long as I've been aware.

My school may be the exception that proves the rule, but our contact hours have actually been cut from 20 to 14 per week with no change in salary. Rumor has it, though, that this was done so that we could continue to be considered part-time for pension purposes and be kept in the private pension system instead of the public pension system.
I'd agree with everything else that's been said, though. On the whole conditions at Korean unis for foreign seem pretty stagnant if not deteriorating. |

Force me to use an assigned textbook and follow a set curriculum; take away my autonomy in the classroom - I can grudgingly manage. Ask me to teach 15 hours a week instead of the 10 or 12 we used to. Yeah, I can do that.
But take away my summer and winter vacations? That's a major deal breaker right there. If that happens, then it's time to look for the exit doors. Maybe find a university in China. Pay is lower but people I know are still getting lots of time off during the summer and winter breaks.
And they're getting free housing included in their contracts.
China has become the new Korea for Asian EFL. |

Not common and requires actual qualifications and relevant experience.

Universities have rarely offered airfare as they prefer to hire locally. Most Universities do not offer housing but many offer a housing allowance of some sort.

Yes for housing - no for airfare. However my uni makes up for it with other generous cash incentives.

Yes+. (see 3 above)

If you're to believe many of the so called experts on here - definitely not. However, get to know some current uni guys and you will find the opposite. |

Jodami, in all honesty, those of us who worked University jobs and post here are still in contact with people working in Universities in Korea.
Simple question of having a personal and professional network and of keeping current. |
