I came to Korea in March 2012. I worked at one hagwon for 6 months before getting fired (long story). Then at the end of August I got another job and had my visa extended to August 2013.

I just found out that because of financial problems (not enough students) that the school I'm working at can't afford to have me anymore. They said they would help me as much as they can, etc.

Before getting another job, I'd like to go back to the US for maybe a month or two but I don't want to get a new visa because it's such a hassle. So I'm wondering if it's possible to get a D10 visa or something before leaving then come back and just transfer to an E2 with a new school without having to get any new documents.

Yes, it is possible and yes, the D10 is the visa to get.

I'm leaving Korea on March 2nd but I haven't gone to immigration yet to change to a D10 (and I'm continuing to work until Feb 28th). Did I screw myself by waiting so long? Or is it still possible to switch to a D10 before leaving (within a week or so) and then stay out of the country for a few months?

If not, would I be able to stay on my current E2 visa and leave the country for a while then come back and transfer to a new employer (if my current school is willing to do that)?
