So I guess this is just one more dose of culture shock for me. I've only been to two bowling alleys so far, supposedly the best two in the city I live in, yet it's almost impossible to throw a decent spin here! I swear they must never grease the lanes, because I had the exact opposite problem at home (too much spin!) One of these alleys was recently renovated, and I could throw just fine 3 or 4 months ago. But now it's terrible.
I realize most Koreans just bowl straight, but it's a bit disheartening when they use professional Caucasian bowlers in their ads. I can just imagine the judgement going in in their heads, "Oh, looks like he's not good enough to throw a spin like So-and-So." Yet, watching some of these folks who actually do throw a spin is like watching something straight out of a what-not-to-do safety video. I've seen some guys contort their whole bodies just to get the ball to curve, and other guys who actually spin it in the opposite direction! That might work on the Wii, but nobody who wants to avoid a forearm injury should ever actually do that.
Anyway, I guess this is just a rant. Maybe others can relate to this or speculate with me. Do you think these alley managers even know that they're supposed to grease the lanes? Perhaps they know but they're too cheap? Or perhaps they know, but they just don't care since most of their customers throw straight and wouldn't notice the difference anyway? Beats me. |
