I have a medical tomorrow. I have been told not to eat after 21:00pm (confirming about fluids now).
Problem is i am scheduled to have the medical after going to immigration at 11:30am. If that takes 3-4 hours that takes me up to 15:30pm. Is a 21:00pm cut off time not a bit excessive??
I have always been told nothing from after 12:00am. Interestingly, this is not for immigration but for the education office, i think blood tests will most likely be involved. |

I think midnight should be okay.
No alcohol tonight, but water should be fine. I have very narrow veins so if I don't drink a bucket of water, they don't get blood, not that they don't keep trying.
Korean doctors have told me no water but it really doesn't affect the tests, it's not like drinking a litre of water dilutes your blood or no-one would have to worry about drug tests. |

I think that prohibition is based entirely on your blood test for cholesterol level. Yes, a heavy fatty meal just beforehand can skew your results. But its questionable that an empty stomach is necessary:

Liquids, no issue. Nothing stops me from my morning coffee & my tests right after have always turned out fine. Just doctors trotting out a standard line.

I was going to say: that first cup of tea in the morning is vital.
No alcohol, obviously. |

In fact if you dont drink enough water beforehand & your urine comes out a bit dense, you'll get a nice little reminder on the test result to drink more water! |

Cholesterol testing is part of the exam? Will high cholesterol cause job loss? High cholesterol runs in my family; I had it at age 17 when I was possibly even a bit underweight. |

No worries. If you test high you just get an advisory note. Not crucial. |

Yes, it's excessive. I'm hypoglycemic and can't go as long as they want me to go without eating. I've argued with them each year, but to no avail, so I just fudge it a bit. I go as long as I can without eating, though.
Last year, when I did the test, I didn't eat past midnight and the next morning (going without breakfast) I couldn't see very well. They commented that my eyesight was a little bad, but passable.
This year, I did the test on a day school wasn't in session so I could eat in the morning. Then I did the test in the afternoon. Hadn't quite been 8 hours, but, I passed. One nurse confirmed that I hadn't eaten lunch (which I hadn't), another asked when my last meal was. I gave a time that was eight hours earlier.
I'm not necessarily advising you do this. There is a method to the madness of not eating. They don't want you to have too much sugar in your blood that might mistakingly indicate that you're a diabetic. But in my case, that shoe didn't fit.
Feels like I'm in the movie, Idiocracy, when I do that stupid test. I like how they want me to do the blood test first and then the urin test...I learned from that mistake.
"Apply pressure on your arm for three minutes. Here is your cup. Fill to this line."
"Uh, huh. You do know that I only have two arms, right?" |

Anything less than 8 hours I wouldn't risk, but 9 o'clock? Go ahead and eat something before you go to sleep. Just skip the breakfast. |

They take a blood sample, so they can get you for syphilis and HIV/AIDS. I also recall a nurse asking me about syphilis during my exam. As for other STDs, well I'm female and just had a full STD exam in the US before coming here. It involves really getting in there and digging. They don't do that in Korea for the medical exam. I'm not sure how men are tested though, so I can't speak to that. I'm guess it would still involve the genitals, and they don't fool around with those. |
