Over the years complaints about the same topics keep cropping up from teachers: pension, contracts, taxes, housing, etc.
So the question is, why haven't conditions improved (or have they)?

Teachers keep thinking they are not going to be the minority of really unlucky ones. |

If you refuse a bad job, another teacher will take it. If they don't take it, then the school will hire naive stupid college grads.
You think we are part of some union where we can complain and make changes? Think again.
Take what you can and ration off the rest, yo wee yo. |

It's called Capitalism at its best (for the rich).
Things improve when the alternatives are all more expensive. That won't happen any time soon. |

I actually thought in this electronic age that things would be better. I think they are for those who properly take the time to vet the school.
You can still get screwed but your chances of being screwed are greatly reduced if you try and do some homework. Talk to someone who is at or was at the school. Ask people on forums such as this and there are others, about the school, recruiter, etc.
The vast majority of the problems I've seen over the last year or two about teachers getting screwed they didn't properly do research. They were naive. People still go to Wonderland for example. There are decent ones among the many but would anyone who has done any modicum of research even chance it with all the other hogwons around?
Over time I've also gotten a little sympathy for schools. Having gotten to know a few directors and owners and I tell them the plight of teachers. They or someone they know has gotten screwed by teachers as well. People agree to come and a few weeks or even a few days before say they are not coming or some simply don't even tell them. They sometimes do the best they can to make someone comfortable and someone skips out after a few weeks or months for reasons most would say are not worthy of skipping out on a contract. Some of us complain a bit too much about stuff that doesn't matter or really isn't that important.
I've been lucky but I did my research so I created my own luck. |

They did improve from about 2007-2009.
But then the recession kicked in and put everything solidly into the employers favor.
Having said that I don't believe workplace abuses are nearly as bad as in 2002. |

More information is available and it is more publicly available. However, more rubbish is available as well, so you need more time to sift through that. |

Pension scams, broken contracts, substandard housing, etc.

The stories remain the same. The number of stories remains small, a tiny percentage of the total number of teachers who come to Korea.
Work conditions have improved. Salaries have risen 40% to 50% with a small decline since the recent Great Recession. Class sizes in hogwans are greatly reduced making it easier for teachers and improving quality for students. The quality of the programs offered is better.
However, in the public schools, many conditions have adjusted downward. |

+1.
Do not mistake the stories you read here as somehow being representative of the majority of foreign teachers in Korea or of their experiences there.... |

That should read ENTRY LEVEL salary. In that respect Julius is partially right, entry level pay has not risen in recent years and over the longer term it has in fact decreased as the market changed.
Average salary is a completely different issue....
On the other hand the offers changed in other ways. Standard work week went from Mon-Sat and is now Mon-Fri, housing went from shared to single.... |

You guys expecting that wages should just keep rising are just dumb. What do think we should be pulling? 3 mill? In the next 10 years? 4 mill? We are freaking ESL teachers who get paid well for just trotting on over here and talking. You aren't going to get paid more than what we are now unless there is a shortage of teachers. The market has reached equilibrium and employers would lose money if they started paying us more. It's not happening. |

Again do not confuse your limited experience with that of others Dodge. I made more than 4 when i left in 2008 and so do many people I know who are currently employed in Korea.
Key thing the better paid teachers share: qualifications and solid experience. most also upgraded their qualifications over time instead of sitting on their BA.
I agree with you on one thing Dodge: a person who sits on his BA in basket weaving and banks on being white and speaking English will not make much progress in terms of pay, conditions and jobs in Korea and eventually will be phased out. |
