If you are going to be travelling in another country and would like to get an ATM card from your Korean bank that allows withdrawals outside of Korea, you may have had a rough go.
I read about people's problems on other sites and thought I may have to go to KEB and open an account to be treated like a human. I was half-right.
I went to my 농협 today--one day removed from finishing my last ever hagwon contract--and inquired about receiving said card. They did some paperwork and had me sign some stuff before presenting me with the 체크카드 and a "You can only use this at stores" caveat.
I proceeded to make a strange face and gave my lowest "왜요?".
The knucklehead behind the counter went on to tell me that it was 'illegal' for foreigners (I live here, have a wife here, make and spend money here, interact with Koreans here...but 'foreigner', yes) and he put on his 'very very sorry' pouty face.
Well, I gathered up my things, resigned to closing my account and looking for another bank, when I decided to say...
[i]There is no such law.
He got on the phone, 'registered' me, and, long story longer, I got my card in 10 minutes ready for use in Vietnam.

Woori bank, absolutely no transaction history, 5 minutes, Visa debit card, international and internet use registration form completed. (mind you, I was the one who insisted on debit/check card, and not a credit card)
I didn't even have ARC then. |

Shinhan bank has a foreign/global center in the Seoul Finance Center at Gwanghwamun station. They are easy to find on FB and online. Hit them up. |

What right to you think you have to speand your money where and when you choose?
Your money is Korean won right? It should be spent in Korea!
Too many teachers here, making money and sending it out of the country.
Keep the won in Korea - Help make Korea even greater! |
