I received a sample contract for a public school position that I'm interviewing for, and it says that in the first 3 months for each month 300,000krw will be paid for a deposit until it reaches 900,000krw. It states if there is no damage the employee will get it back.

Is this a standard in the contract? I know in the hagwons to not accept if there are any clauses about paying a security deposit. This is also a sample contract and not my official contract yet, so maybe it is old?

Anyone know anything about this? The only things I could find online are from a couple of years ago.

It has been standard practice with GEPIK for the last decade (and continues to be so).

The Gyeonggi Provincial Education Office takes it to protect the school (your official sponsor) from financial liability for things that you may do during the term of your contract.

Unless you pull a runner (leave Korea without notice) you will get it back (provided your bills are all paid) at the time of your departure (unless of course the government goes broke).

Yip! although... my colleagues took one look at me the day I walked in and immediately said I don't need to pay any attention to such shenanigans!

When the time came for furniture to be handed to staff in our county mine were carefully selected - it's all about appearance... wake up 1 - 2 hours earlier than the rest and take care of yourself. the rest will fall in your lap like the egg white omelette you taste before work every day.

Regards,

R.
