My wife and I are heading to a wedding in Kilkenny in the fall so we're looking for some stuff to see and do. Obviously Dublin and Belfast are on our list. Any other suggestions for Irish expats on here or others who have traveled around Ireland? (Include any good spots to stay if you know of any)

Rent a car and travel around the south and west coasts. Get in the Cliffs of Moher, Galway city, Connemara, surfing in Sligo and some festivals if you can. When you're in Dublin take a trip to Glendalough and the Wicklow mountains, this can be done nearly anywhere in Dublin.

Visit the usuals like the Guinness storehouse, Dublin castle but also try out the Jameson Factory and Trinity Collage.

Go to Galway, Dublin is a junkie-infested hole.

Dublin a junky invested hole.Rolling Eyes Honestly dude, your evaluations of other countries sucks. "Israel is the greatest violator of human rights anywhere on the globe, and is the greatest threat the world has faced since Nazi Germany." Now Dublin is a "hole" that should be avoided. Very Happy

OP, Dublin's great. You'll regret it if you take Waygeek's advice. Dublin's also well situated for doing trips to Northern Ireland and to the south.

Still, I don't know why you're asking for advice on Daves. Do a google search or pick up a travel guide at Gyobo bookstore. Yer being lazy.

Scorpion, I lived in Dublin for 16 years.

I've seen junkies riding bikes snatching Apple phones etc. from unsuspecting pavement walkers (they call it apple picking).

I've walked by a methodone clinic every morning for six months on the way to work, having to step over vomit while dozens of people lined up outside.

Walking down O'Connell St., the main street of Dublin, you'll come across at least ten junkies. Half of them will ask you for a euro, but now I hear its two. They're pretty brazen.

You'll find a homeless guy waiting for you sitting beside every ATM.

Pick-pocketing is rife, not only in the streets but in pubs/clubs etc.

If you have more experience than that, please, do share.

Don't necessarily agree that Dublin is a junkie-riddled hole (they are on O'Connell street though) but Galway is the best city in Ireland, Belfast a close second.

You could always head to Monaghan Laughing

Hah not sure there's much up in Monaghan! Laughing Might as well head to Kells, Drogheda or Ardee at that point hah!

I found the north to be very depressing, man, the atmosphere up there is not great, though I was only in Derry. Belfast may be another kettle of fish.

OP, I also recommend Waterford. Beautiful place, home away from home, I love it. Nice beaches, nice town.

If you do find yourself in the east, which I don't really recommend, head to the Hill of Tara and Glendalough. They are the most beautiful parts of the east IMO, and junkie free too! Smile

I'm from Monaghan and you're right, there is sweet FA up there.

If you wanna continue the junkie tour of Ireland, OP, head to Athlone..

Perhaps you did. And like any city, Dublin has its nasty areas. Nevertheless your use of hyperbole is tiresome. Dublin has lovely areas and great places of interest. It's also a great walkable city if you're in good health. If you lived there for sixteen years I can see the disillusionment setting in. But to call it a "hole" which should be avoided by tourists is very bad advice.

Also, how can one have lived in Dublin for 16 years and never visited Belfast? It's an hour up the friggin road. Could it possibly be that, after Israel, the UK is the greatest threat to world peace since Hitler? Very Happy

I don't understand people who think Belfast is a great city. There's very little to see. It's a decaying industrial city that had the hell kicked out of it for thirty years. As for architecture, what is there besides the City Hall and Stormont? Sure there's a gaudy university and the Opera House. But really, what else? Belfast is a good place to park yourself for exploring the north-east coast and doing a day's jaunt to L' Derry. And, of course, there's things to see in Belfast for conflict junkies (murals, walls, etc). But let's not pretend it's some beautiful city. In terms of architecture and atmosphere I'll take Dublin over Belfast any day.

I think the whole "Belfast is great" thing derives from it being better than it's nasty image had led people to expect. But that doesn't make it great. It simply makes it "not as bad as I had feared."

Silly boy, you don't have to consider a neighboring city beautiful to have visited it. Especially one that you visit on an extended lunch break. And given its 'fame' were you not sufficiently curious to visit it even once over 16 years. Londonderry's much further from Dublin. Yet you went there, but not Belfast which can be gotten to by bicycle.

Yer an odd cookie.
