If you work for SMOE or have been working for SMOE in the past
1) what is the distance between your school and housing (how long do you travel on the train/bus or walk)
2) what type of housing do you live in, and how small is it? (villa? officetel? apt? tiny studio? 1 bedroom, etc?
Thanks |

| Haven't worked for SMOE, but seen a few apartments. One was super small, another was nice sized for Seoul but not huge, and the third's size was between the two. They were all close to their schools. Being in Seoul means you will probably get a pretty small place, but it shouldn't be super far. |

What does a nice size apt for Seoul mean? in terms of pyung or meters? I guess one room (studio) is a norm for Seoul...just seems small.
And I guess it's usually not an officetel but a villa type of studio? |

Nice size meant one room studio, but with a little more space than your average studio in Seoul (which from my experience is very tiny). I didn't really take the time to measure the place, but it was comparable to a one room studio in the US. I wouldn't really worry about the size of your apartment if you want to live in Seoul. I've seen big apartments in other cities and areas, but never heard of or saw one in Seoul. I am sure a few people luck out and get a nice one, but I doubt it happens often. I am planning on sharing an apartment with my wife in Seoul, and am hoping for something decent but prepared to deal with the worst. |

| I work for SMOE. My offictel is a really nice and modern loft. It's the biggest I've had in the past 4 years teaching at various hagwons. I really like it. And it's only 2 subway stops from school. The only downside is building management fees which come to just over 100 000 a month. Gas and electricity are extra. |

I worked for SMOE for a few years. My situation was probably a little different than the majority, as I was the first NET at the school. I went with a couple of KETs and an agent to see several apartments to choose from. The villas were really close to the school (one behind the school that I could actually see out of my classroom window). Those villas weren't to my liking, so I chose a newer officetel about a 10min bike ride away. It was the smallest and the management fees and utility bills were pretty high there, but they had a parking lift, which was a definite plus because I had a car. I already had a bunch of stuff, so they only had to provide the basic furnishings for me.
I'm not sure how many pyeong it was (it was pretty small), but it was enough for a single dude no problem. |
