It seems like when a store goes out of business or there's a new building being constructed, the first thing that pops up is a T-world, Olleh, or a U+ store. There are even the same stores across the street from each other and around the corner within throwing distance as well. What's with the super saturation of cellphone shops?

Smart phone sales. I would have to think things are saturated by now. Easy biz to set up with not a lot of investment in shop or staff.

Yea, that makes sense. Kind of like the coffee shop business people were talking about before.

Supposedly if you have a good location it's okay money. I knew a guy who owned a cell phone shop in one of the province with 3 other friends. They hired 3 employees. The owners would clear anywhere between 2 million to 4 million a month each, depending on how well sales were. That's after expenses. They'd pay the 3 employees whatever the minimum wage was.

You can't go 50 feet in the little town I'm in without seeing either a coffee shop or a cell phone store, and they're opening up more this month. What the hell is up with that? Isn't the market a little over-saturated?

There does seem to be a lack of ideas for different retail shops.

As long as there are millions of brainless people spending over 5% of their income on phone bills and replacing them whenever something new comes out there will be phone dealers everywhere.
Also, as someone mentioned there aren't many ideas flying around and most people can't think of anything innovative or new so they just do whatever the others do. (restaurant, budongsan, coffee shop, cell phone store, convenience store etc.)

I know someone who opened one of those shops. Never made a dime. Financed it from hubby's business income. Too proud to work for someone and wanted to be a CEO. I think there's a lot of businesses like that in Korea.

The problem with phone shops is that the more you sell, the better deals you get from the makers. So it's always cheaper to hop on the subway and go to Gangnam station than support the local guy.

This. Small business owners exploded in number after the foreign exchange crisis in 98. Restaurants, taxi drivers, small shops, etc. They didn't all make it big, but it was better than getting laid off and jumping out of an office building window, right?

Though the economy since recovered (end went into another slump) some found being their own boss to be to their liking. Would you want to work for somebody else in Korea's working culture?
