"When David tz found himself divorced from his Korean wife and jobless, he decided he was done with Seoul and South Korea. However, his downward spiral into booze left him in debt and owing $10,000 in fines to the Korean Government. When he tried to leave the country, he had to pay his fines or else..."

I read part of the book. He was a teacher who tried to leave Korea but was stopped at the airport. He spent several months in a tiny cell for 23 hours a day because he couldn't pay the money he owed. Finally, the Korean government decided it didn't make sense to continue to keep him locked up at taxpayers' expense.

David has a true story to tell about the inner working of an otherwise successful Canadian individual who faced unknown challenges
surviving in a foreign country. We may live in a globalized world but the guts and resolve it takes to actually leave your country and start a new life is not always so easy and in most cases impossible. This is a chilling reminder of the challenges any immigrant to any country may face. This book is a testament to the psychological toughness that individualism develops within the western world. David took the leap of faith into the unknown and made it back.

Yeah it takes real guts to turn to booze and 'drink your problems away' Rolling Eyes

Cliffs:

Western guy comes Korea to teach ESL. Marries a Korean woman. Woman leaves him because he drinks too much. Woman goes to New York with her new boyfriend. Because of this, man (author) loses F-visa. This makes him sad so he drinks even more. Does stupid things while drunk, which causes him to rack up fines. Goes to jail for unpaid fines.

What a loser. Lock him up, throw away the key. Lost his wife because he's too much of a beta. One less beta in this world, good riddance.

It doesn't take any guts to move to a modernized country. If he moved to Africa, that would be a story.

It was an OK read. I found a little bit better then Brother One Cell. Action wise that is. There are some minor quibbles about it. As mentioned it is a direct blog to book cut. Cause of that, some aspect of the story are confusing. Like who people he mention are? Or some event in the past, that we do not know about. He needs more of a introduction. He needs to understand that his Journal needs to be explained for a wider audience.

If you looking for a read that is not a look at me "I am special for teaching in Korea" Plus the author is a bit jaded and does not always pull punches, which I like.

It is an OK price. I think I got it a touch cheaper from LuLu.

I cant see it generating a lot of talk. I read the first few pages from the link in the OP. The guy pretty much deserved his unremarkable punishment & his writing is pedestrian.

"When my marriage broke down, so did my mental well-being and life. It’s hard to pinpoint when it all started to fall apart. Was it before or after that prostitute that one drunken night?"

A sad read.

"The radio has no volume control since it's piped into my cell from a speaker mounted in the ceiling, and plays k-pop constantly."
