I'm being offered a second contract at the same school. Other than a bad apartment situation, which is being resolved presently AND a rather hands-off style of administration (actually a little frustrating when I need help)... it's a pretty good gig.

Right now I'm getting 2.3 per month and 20 per hour for overtime.

They offered $800 towards my airfare at the start of the contract.

To move into the new room requires the break of the present lease on the crap room they placed me in initially. The landlord will settle for 2 months rent even though the lease runs until September. I have a sneaking suspicion the hagwon will expect me to pay this roughly $850.

I will have about 8 years of experience when I begin my new contract with them in July. As I mentioned, it will be my second year with this school.

I've been told that I've brought heaps of professionalism to the place when compared to the previous foreign instructors they've hired in the past few years.

In general I have between 20-30 adult students over a 6 hour daily split-shift schedule. I often get the impression that the school is breaking even but not wildly successful.

I want to get at least a couple weeks of extra vacation to go home and see family. What else should/could I ask for?

Do you have another job lined up that offers money and benefits as good as your present job?.................Probably not. You do know what the job situation is like right now I hope.

No, I don't have another gig lined up. Nor could I go to another one without submitting another CBC (so it seems...). So, I'm not going to ask for the moon. I would be satisfied with a trip home to see family. A friend of mine locally told me that an additional 100,000 per month is standard. If I forego that... roughly 1.2 million won... that should cover the cost of lease severance and a cheap temporary teacher for a couple weeks.

Do you guys think this is reasonable?

All people are different, but I'll tell you my experience. I'm staying at the same place and I negotiated to take my summer and winter vacations at the same time so that I could go home for 2 weeks. I asked for an extra 100,000 won which they said was fine. I even asked for a bigger place and the boss told me that she could pay up to 270,000 per month towards a new place plus the deposit. So, getting a two room or three room is no problem. The only stipulation I had to agree to was to work Saturdays until August of this year, but the Saturdays are only for 3 hours in the morning. Oh yea, I still get the standard summer vacation off and I was allowed to go home during a different time of the year. So, it just depends on your boss's attitude and your relationship. Just be polite and ask for what you want.

If the school hires a new teacher, this will cost them at least a million in recruitment fees: that's the same as your basic raise of 100,000 a month. Plus they may have to pay the airfare for the new teacher, maybe another million. So if they really do like you then 200,000 extra a month seems fair. This is assuming a new hire from outside the country.

So, they will pay the lease severance charge and allow me a month off. Unfortunately the month off is going to be unpaid. That hurts a bit.

Any suggestions for a really... and I mean really cheap ticket in June?
