I first heard his unique, powerful vocals and folk-guitar playing when he performed live on a jazz radio show that I regularly listened to in my mid-teens and was also impressed by his humility and outlook on life. A couple years later (1969), I was fairly close to the stage when he was the opening musical act at the original Woodstock festival, which led to his becoming recognized internationally as a major talent. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richie_Havens

This is the second celebrity obituary post lately that was by someone other than On The Other Hand. He clearly needs to pick up his game.

I saw him performing on TV just a few months ago. Can't recall what it was for, but his voice was just as great as it had always been.
