What will you do? Do you have an exit strategy? Flights out of Incheon might not be possible, so I thought maybe going to Busan, taking a ferry to Japan and flying from there if that's what I gotta do to get out. Thoughts?

I read the other thread, but it turned to much into a debate on what will happen if war breaks out regarding China and Russia etc etc. I was simply asking what you would do for a possible exit strategy. Thanks for not being helpful, and I've also lived in Korea 1.5 years, so I'm not a "newb."

My mom and dad want me to return to the U.S. ASAP. I also have a few friends in China that refuse to even consider looking at teaching in Korea now.

Is it crazy for us to be here right now? I don't know - but which country is safest in the region? It's definitely not Japan, not Taiwan.

I just got this email:

As some of you know, in my previous career I was an intelligence analyst for 11 years. Five of those years I spent as a military analyst, and the other six were spent on other types of analysis and collection.
During my five years as a military analyst my main area of focus was North Korea and I was an expert in North Korean special operations forces.
Why am I telling you this?
Well, it would appear the situation in Korea is growing more serious. Of course, I no longer have access to intelligence reports but I can do what is called open source intelligence (OSINT) analysis. Based on that analysis I believe the situation is quite dangerous, with a significant possibility of something small (relative to full war) to happen within the next few weeks. That something small has the potential to escalate rather quickly into a full scale conflict.
I am not saying this to scare anyone but just to keep you informed.
Many people think that the government and/or embassies will be able to fully protect them or that there will be some evacuation order issued far in advance of any conflict. It would be a huge error in judgment to believe this will happen.
I encourage all of you to make your own plans to evacuate in case of an emergency.
Here is what I recommend:
-Pack a bag with at least 4 liters of water, chocolate, spam/tuna, maybe crackers, essential documents, a few clothing items, baby wipes, toothbrush & toothpaste (perhaps a razor and shaving cream), lighters, flashlight, and a knife.
-Have cash readily available. I recommend at least 100,000 won but more would be better.
-Have a designated meeting point with friends and/or family. Don't expect the cell network to work.
-Head south.
-If it has escalated into a full scale war, avoid the Yongsan army base area , the Ministry of National Defense, the Blue House, Osan and Kunsan air bases.
Use the undergorund tunnels of the subway to move south.
The military and/or civil defense personnel may direct you where to go.
Again I don't want to scare anyone and I hope none of this will be necessary, but I think it's best to be prepared.

Maybe you couldn't read the other thread through the tears, newb so just take a deep breath, stop panicking. Count to 10 and read it again. You'll see that among the non-sensical gibberish and arguments that make up a large chunk of any Daves thread that goes over the 8 pages that ironically the topic being discussed was what to do in case of war....just as the name suggests. OMG!

*Just kidding with ya, with the insults anyhow, toots. I love all you new guys in the ROK with your wide-eyed innocence. Like puppies. Those little tea cup poodles with the big heads and bug eyes. Pooing themselves, crying all night and stuff. So cute. I just wanna hug you all and kiss you. You're welcome to come and stay with me. I'll keep ya safe....*wink* *wink*

PS....you're a chick, right?*

Yeah right - you got me. Rolling Eyes

I'd never even *heard* of Korea until 2011 let alone visited the place.

Everything else I ever wrote on here about the country was just told to me by some guy who arrived here two weeks before I did.

Are you there now? OMG Isn't it scary?!! I heard they eat funny foods and stuff. Shocked

Go back to bed.

War or no war? Who knows, at this point. Lard butt up North is writing a check with his mouth that his spacious ass won't be able to cash.

What some of you are not keeping in mind is that the North's bluster is making big headlines all around the world. That means that family members are hearing and reading the news and assuming the worst could happen. Then they contact their loved ones in Korea about the situation. That's been happening to more than just newbies. It can be unsettling.

Now, just imagine that you are a newbie to all of this. Yeah, it can create a situation where you have family members begging you to come back home from the danger zone. So, what do you do?

Just remember that the B-52's are here, so we have nothing to fear.

As someone who's NOT a newbie Wink , I've seen this type of situation many times. I've also had friends and relatives express concern for my safety.

Am I worried? Not particularly. Even if the worst DOES happen (which I think is highly unlikely), my first response would NOT be to try to run. The country will be in chaos, so sitting tight will be my choice.

I think if you ARE sincerely concerned, you might want to think about going home. This type of stress isn't for everyone.
