Reading this exceptionally negative forum has coloured my views of Korea. Regretfully some the of misconceptions I formed were that Koreans were xenophobic....or racist....or unfriendly is some way.

Nothing could be further from the truth

Don't take my word for it, take the word of a black teacher that was here and she is no newbie either.

The above video is not unique I could post dozens of other similar ones but I can't be bothered.

I shake my head at the misconceptions people are getting through reading these boards.

Wait, so you've found a video (or dozens of videos) of people who say korea isn't racist and that automatically invalidates the opinion of everyone who feels that it is?

I'm sorry, that video carries as much weight as the average comment posted on these boards.

Are you referring to the racist Koreans or the racist foreigners?

Not only invalidates the opinions, but the actual experiences and people who has lived and witnessed the racism up close and personal. OP is blind with an agenda. Nothing else to say.

I don't think Koreans are truly racist, but they are inherently a bit xenophobic because of their Hermit Kingdom heritage. People are either Korean or not Korean - no matter what color or nationality they are.
Sure, there are some absurdly outdated stereotypes of foreigners here, but no particular race is singled out for abuse. Also, the level of racism that exists in Europe, North America and Australia doesn't really exist here. Any white people had dogshit thrown at them, or been bundled into a car for a group beating?

When a student tells one of my fellow teachers "my dad told me not to make friends with whites," I have a pretty hard time believing that racism doesn't exist in Korea. But it's the same as almost anywhere back in the States, really. Some people just have this small world mindset that assumes, "since this is how I do things, this is how everyone must do it."

I've said this before, but the concept of "racism" doesn't necessarily exist in Korea. You guys think racism is bad because you have been educated on the concept, because it is relevant in mixed societies. If your country didn't have a concept like racism you probably won't think much about it.

Oh, right, and the concept of "homosexuality doesn't exist here either right? lol.

Nice theory. Too bad it doesn't match the facts on the ground. One such fact being the naturalized Korean citizen who was not permitted to enter a spa because, regardless of her citizenship, she's "not Korean."

You really don't understand what racism is, do you?

You can't be so naive as to believe that's actually true.

Yes, there have been violent assaults against foreigners in Korea. Again, you can't be so naive as to believe the tripe you're spewing here.

I am certainly no apologist, but I honestly don't believe that racism as we know it is a big problem here. More xenophobic than racist, I would say. Not that that it is a good thing.
To the above poster, I certainly do know what racism is. I am Chinese/English mixed and I grew up in a small town in England during the 1980s - a period when the Far Right was resurgent. I don't want to bore you with the details, but a lot of that abuse was visceral.

How have you managed to be in Korea longer than a week and not know that the Korean concept of nationality (as in Korean nationality) is tied in with the concept of Korean race? That makes anti-Korean xenophobia racism.

I'm going to assume that in Korea there are racists as well as non-racists.

Shocking huh

I guess I see Koreans as being very ethnocentric and ignorant of other people, but are they racist? Are Koreans a race? Not sure about that. They distrust the Chinese as much as they do white people - probably even more. Are they a separate race to the Chinese though?
All these terms, like xenophobia, racism, ethnocentrism need to be examined and defined before they are thrown around so freely.

Someone clearly gave centralcali some racist looks on the subway this morning on her way to work...

Yeah, some koreans are racist just like some people are racist in every country in the world. But, no the level of racism and hate crimes etc are not nearly as bad in Korea as they are back home (wherever home is).

People in rural America can be insanely racist, skin heads still exist and the police straight up kill people because of the color of their skins quite often.
