Have never been to the States before so I'm looking for some pretty basic knowledge.
Can I fly to the States on a one way ticket and drive to Canada or will I need an outgoing ticket saying when I'm leaving the country? |

Canadians are not part of the visa waiver program in the US so the visa waiver program rules don't apply.
You do not need to show onward passage.
Passport must be valid for entire period of stay.
It is fine to drive, take a bus, ride a bike, thumb or even walk home if you are so inclined.

If by drive you mean via rental car then no, you cannot return that way. Canadians are not permitted to rent American cars and drive them across. |

No, but you can meet your family in Seattle and drive their vehicle to Van, meet in Detroit and drive to Windsor.... etc...

Interesting. I've never heard of that.
I seriously can't rent a car in the US and drive it to Canada? (as a Canadian citizen)
Would they stop me from leaving at the border? |

Absolutely ridiculous. It would mean more money more jobs. |

Trust me. It's true. I'm in New York right now, and my passport was damaged earlier this week. Initially, Passport Canada told me that I would have to cross back into Canada by land and apply for an expedited passport in Montreal or Toronto (but thankfully the consulate here issued me a temporary one). Looked into it and it turns out that we can't take rental cars through that way. Your family can drive THEIR car through and pick you up, though. |

No, the rental companies in the US want their cars driven in the USA. Different regulations, insurance, etc. So, you could land in Dallas and drive to Detroit and drop it off the branch nearest the border. Then, you can thumb it, walk, wahtever to Windsor. In Windsor, you can rent a car from a Canadian car rental company and drive to Halifax if you want. You have to stay within Canada with it. Nothing to do with government laws.
Canadians have privledged entry into the USA for up to 6 months at a time. Privledged compared to many other countries around the world. I flew from Incheon to Chicago on Korean Air once. The Koreans had to get into a long line for visitors. I got into the much shoter line for US citizens and residents and got through quickly with a Canadian passport. |

That is weird.
I have driven to Montreal from Vermont with no problem.
Doesn`t make sense that Canadians can`t do the same. |

You can rent a car in the US and drive it into Canada, provided you INFORM THEM FIRST, at the counter. They'll give you a Canadian insurance card to take along.
I've never done a one-way rental, always returned it to the US, so not sure if they'll let you drop it off in Canada. BUT, you CAN drive a US rental to Canada, for sure. |

I don't believe this applies to Canadians, as per the OP. Again, as a Canadian, I tried in February and I couldn't do it. |
