Hi all. This may be a long shot but... any social workers out there who taught or are currently teaching English in Korea? I'm completing my MSW degree in a month and am seriously considering teaching in Korea (Actually I have been seriously considering this for years now). I'm wondering if and how teaching in korea would impact my opportunities in the social work field, considering that I am just completing my MSW. I love being a social worker so this is not a career change for me, however I really want to return to Korea, primarily to learn and hopefully become as fluent as possible in Korean language. I'm also really interested in social services in korea and plan to get involved in some way, whether through volunteering or other (should I go to Korea). Really, I'm trying to find ways to mesh these two passions of mine, but I'm worried it may not be possible...
Anyway, I'd also like to hear about any volunteer experiences in Korea.
Thanks! |

I think you could make quite a lucrative side income stream, counseling
some teachers here in Korea.

That's an oxymoron!
I think you'd be best doing at least a year or two in your own field, in your own country before spreading your wings..... |

I have a friend who did a similar masters in Japan, and is currently doing his PhD in the same subject area at Yonsei.
He seems to have connections to nearly EVERY NGO in Seoul, and has in the past (before getting married, having kids, and beginning his PhD) found many positions with those NGO's and other organizations.
Also have another friend who works with the UN Development Program and has his hands in so many projects he cant help but be busy.
In short, I think there are plenty of opportunities for someone who is very proactive about getting out there, seeking out internships and short-term projects to get involved with. These seem to be the ways both of the above-mentioned people were successful with networking and finding awesome careers in the field.
That said...stick to Seoul. Plenty of social programs and opportunities in other cities, but Seoul is the place where such things offer a greater chance to mopve beyond the ESL game and into permanent positions with world-wide organizations. |
