Just read this "breaking news."

North Korea's Asia-Pacific Peace Committee said:

"In the event war breaks out, we don't wish to harm foreigners living in South Korea. Before anything happens, evacuation measures need to be made for foreign organizations, businesses, tourists, etc, living in Seoul and the rest of the country, for their personal safety."

(*translated by me. Edits/improvements welcome)

From: http://news.nate.com/view/20130409n20517

Sometimes the way Koreans use "etc." can be very annoying. They've basically put teachers in the same sub-category as hostess bar girls and 3D workers (not that for some, there isn't much difference).

The embassies in Pyongyang ignored them. They're just trying to get a bite from another line.

Just googled around a bit. This seems to happen every year. I should have added "...again" to the thread title.

I usually translate 등 preceded by a list as "such as ..." and change the word order.

Well, at least the North Koreans had the decency not to patronize us the way the South Koreans do.

If this was written by South Koreans it would have read to include:

"we don't wish to harm ...people with mental disabilities, foreigners, single moms, low income house holds, handicapped people..."

Hate to say it, and I don't mean this is my usual sarcastic way, but in South Korea:

Foreigner = Low Social Class.

You see this assumption in the media and government policy all the time.

So good on the NORKs!

Generally this may be true, but I think more in terms of the S Asians workers working here. I don't think they group ESL teachers in with that group, do you?

Well, I think it is time that people stop saying bad things about 김정은. He truely has our best interests at heart. I never knew he cared so much.

This article is frightening

The 2nd paragraph states:
"Analysts see a direct attack on Seoul as extremely unlikely. The warning Tuesday from the North's Korean Asia-Pacific Peace Committee is similar to past threats that analysts call an attempt to raise anxiety in foreign capitals."

Why do you think so? What specifically is 'frightening'?

Here's Reuters' version of same news story: http://news.yahoo.com/north-korea-suspends-last-project-south-putin-cites-001526987.html

It seems like - other than closing of the Kaesong industrial complex - business is going on as usual in Seoul (and the SK stock market even "edged higher" while the won "dipped a little" after the warning...)

Still, it's understandable if many foreigners start feeling that being regularly subjected to these kind of escalating threats (even if they are bluffs) becomes unnerving after a while.

My friend just got back from the airport and says the whole airport is flooded with foreigners (mostly students and elderly people) and Koreans trying to get out. There are people everywhere. You can't even get inside the departure terminals.
