Pain de mie - located near 영화사로 55. I don't know the exact address, but this is one building over. They bake actual European style bread - not the spongy, sweet stuff you find everywhere else.

To get there, take exit 1 of Achasan (아차산) Station. Take the first major right onto 용마산로. Continue straight to 영화사로, the next major road. Turn right. I am unsure if the bakery is on the right or left. These pictures may help: http://piesan.blog.me/10161105075

If you go to check out there and they ask you a question you maybe don't understand, they're asking if you want them to slice the bread. For smaller loaves, don't do it. One reason is that the small white loaf on the bottom rack is made with cheese, which creates a an air pocket as the bread rises. And I should mention, actual cheese, not yucky processed stuff. For larger loaves it's fine, unless you have a bread knife.

Best bread in Seoul is at Publique in Sangsu. You have to go before 2pm or they will be sold out of the best stuff. The owner worked at bakeries in Paris for 10 + years. Its not cheap but its fantastic.

Thanks for the excellent info.

I have had good bread at bakeries in the basements of department stores, especially. The bread lovers that I associate with each probably have their favorite such store.

and at world class hotels:

-- the Hyatt (the bakery in a hotel), that is the Hyatt just up the hill from Itaewon, next to Yongsan Mountain

That Hyatt has the best rye bread anywhere in Seoul, at least according to my brother!

There are plenty of places to get good bread in Seoul. Most of the five-star hotels have bakeries that serve proper Western-style bread, for one. There are also a multitude of small bakeries around Itaewon and Hannam-dong run by Westerners and Koreans who have lived abroad for another.
