|

Hello all! I've wanted to teach overseas for quite awhile but have continued putting it off. I finally started making concrete steps to do so recently and decided on Korea. I know the background check is only good for 6 months and that the 2 big hiring seasons for the public school positions are in September and March, so I contacted a recruiter to find out whether Fall 2013 was still possible. She told me this:

We have public school positions available right now, but they will only be available for the next couple of weeks. I don't know if that will give you enough time to get into this group of applicants because you do not have your background check ready. With that said, I am not sure if we will have public school positions available again until the next term (2014), but positions open up all the time, and people don't stick with their jobs, so there is always a possibility. |
Why won't they have positions available for fall 2013? Is this a situation specific to the recruiter or is the fall not as big of a hiring season as the spring?
I'm trying to figure out whether to get my background check and various documents ready ASAP to try and get in during the fall or whether I should wait a few months and shoot for the spring of 2014.
Regarding my background: I'm 28 years old from the US with a bachelor's degree in English. No teaching certifications or official teaching experience but I've worked as a writing tutor and had an internship in college helping to teach an English 101 class.
I know some people have decent enough experiences with hagwons, but their shadiness worries me and I think a public school position would be better for a first-time ESLer such as myself. |

Apply directly see what they say. Unless you only want Seoul or GEPIK, Im not sure what the story with them this year is, but the EPIK seems to be business as usual |

recruiting for public school jobs usually takes place about 90 days prior to the term start. Fall term starts at the end of August so recruiting is taking place NOW (mid March to mid May).
Your CBC needs to be 6 months old when it lands on the desk at immigration in Korea, NOT when you come to Korea or start work in Korea.
If you are waiting for your CBC now then you will not make it for the main recruitment for PS jobs for the late summer starts.
Next March starts will be recruiting from Oct - Nov with all your documents due in Korea by the 1st week of Dec.
Good luck.
PS. you may be lucky and find a "one-off" (direct hire) job in a PS through a random recruiter even if you miss the main recruitment drive of EPIK and GEPIK.

It seems like GEPIK hires later than EPIK. Anyone else find that to be the case? The current teachers with GEPIK have not even been asked to re-sign. GEPIK hires for a specific school. EPIK will hire based on estimated openings. EPIK will hire a set amount and place them wherever needed. The school interviews for GEPIK so they will wait until they know what their current NET is doing. June should be a good GEPIK month. Maybe you will have your documents back by then. |

Don't fret, I'm sure there are still some openings in Pyeongyang. |

For what it's worth, I spoke with a recruiter last month about GEPIK and he did state that their hiring probably won't start until June. |
