Hello Dave's Family,

It seems like my state of California does not apostille Federal documents. It seems like I have to send my FBI CBC to Washington D.C which I am not too worried about. I had a couple questions and wanted to call in the Authentications Department, but they have no operator and just a recorded message.
When I requested my FBI CBC, I put a note on the application to authenticate the document. My FBI CBC has the signature, and a stamped seal on it.
Once authenticated, I don't need to notarize it correct? With the authentication, it is ready for apostille?
When I obtain the federal apostille, I am a bit confused. After doing some research, I am a bit more confused.

Do I need:
1. http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/63001.pdf
2. http://eforms.state.gov/editdocument.aspx?documentid=1
3. neither?

the website : http://www.state.gov/m/a/auth/c16921.htm, doesn't really give me specific directions on what is needed for the federal apostille for my FBI CBC.

thanks!

Yes, you do need to send it to DC and no, it does not need to be notarized Smile just a word of warning, if you directly mail it to the DOS in DC, you will be waiting for your apostille for 5 weeks. If you have a departure date much sooner than that, I highly recommend you use a courier service. The DOS prioritizes walk-in appointments and your CBC will be apostilled in 48 hours and then mailed back to you. Smile

I actually have heard about the courier service as well. Do you know of any in the Los Angeles area? I am not sure how courier service works. If you can explain the process, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Very Happy

I actually found this website:
http://www.usauthentication.com/place-order.html

I think this is the type of courier service that I would need. Hopefully they would be reliable and not lose my documents! My, what a headache that would be.

You'll typically need to find a courier service in DC and ship your docs to them. Usaauthentication is one of those services. I used ProEx and I am really pleased with their services. They are a small company who answer the phone until late at night and just provide quality services. I was antsy to send of my CBC in the first place and the owner personally emailed me when my doc was dropped off for an apostille and let me know when it would be shipped back out to me. I appreciated the peace of mind their service gave me Smile

If you notarize the signed with FBI Seal Background check and drive to Sacramento. They will do it in about 5 minutes. Costs about 20 bucks. I have done it twice.
