[b]Hi everyone,
Finally my registration application got through and can't wait to post
something here already!
I just started working at a Hagwon near my home in Incheon, my
students are mostly elementary 5th or 6th grades and middle school
students, honestly I've never seen students like this in other countries I've
stayed! Not all my students are monsters though. But these rude boys and
girls really irritated me! I read a post here asking what to do with
disruptive students and I found many teachers had this issue who finally
gave up and just pretended to teach to the walls...
However, the other day my woman boss talked to me that I needed to be
scary for teaching these students. Now I'm stressed for that. Since when
being scary becomes a requirement for English teachers? Besides I really
don't think English is a yelling language like Korean :p
Ok well enough complaints and I just want to like my job and do it well.
So I wonder how long have you worked or been working in hagwon or
how long do you think you can work in a hagwon?
Comments please guys and ladies!
Thanks!!!!!!
PS: Since some comments went a little far, FYI, I'm not an English native. I was born in China. I teach English now.

Be glad that your boss is letting you yell at the kids. I think most places won't allow you to discipline students at all since you are suppose to be the fun teacher. I teach the same age groups as you, 5th,6th and middle school kids. Talk to the bad students in private after class and ask them what's up. If that doesn't work, see if one of the Korean teachers will call the parents for you. If that doesn't work, as long as the students are being quiet and not bothering the students who want to learn, just leave them be. |

I worked at a hagwon in Incheon for just under 2 years, and could have stayed there for several more years, had I not gotten a university job. I had a boss that allowed me to do my own thing, though, and the majority of the kids were either good or scared after I shouted. Learn some Korean, and life will get a lot easier. Best of luck! |

Thx for the suggestion! The problem is all my students ran away after class and I had another class starting immediately...had no time to talk to'em in private, even though I asked them what's up in class sometimes there was no responce or just like this: Me :What's happening? S: What?
Me: What happened? S: What? Me: What's going on? S: What?..... |

I assume the OP is actually Korean since they mention Incheon is their home. The writing style is certainly not that of a native speaker. |

I'm not Korean but yes I live in Incheon and this is my home. I wish I were Korean so I could yell to kids like a Korean teacher! I'm not a native American. I got my master in the States and lived there for years.
The vice president just talked to me and said that there were complains, I felt so bad and I wondered that was actually made up, because when I asked which class he couldn't tell me exactly and he even changed topic, anyway bosses are always picky, even I think I did everything I should do but they are still asking... now I'm stressful...
Another example from your poll: Oh I can work at Hagwon for years!
Sorry to sound rude but though posters sometimes miss out words by mistake when typing on the net, it seems that your written English is at fault here. Especially the last 2 things I put in bold type. Your use of 'stressful' is completely wrong.
You do seem as if you are Korean or to give it another guess, Indian or Pakistani. If you are a native English speaker, then I'd be very surprised if you told me your Master's degree was to do with English language/literature.
Yes, Korean kids are usually bad mannered and are encouraged by Korean society to have no respect for a teacher who is not Korean. You need to tell your boss/director that you cannot deal with talking to individual students by yourself as your Korean is not up to it. Ask them to sit with you when you see the students after class. This will ensure that the kids will at least be made to take the issue seriously to some extent. |

I got my master in the States and lived there for years. I had different working experiences in Mahattan too. Why didn't other comments mention about my writing style? |
You say you lived in the US for years. So, where are you from originally? Where did you grow up? What other language(s) did you grow up with? |

Entirely possible we're being trolled by a Korean reporter trying to get someone to say something that could be quoted or misconstrued. |
