|

Hi there. I'd love it if you guys could tell me about interesting places you've been that are near, but not in, Seoul.
I work at Yonsei, and my brother and dad are coming to visit me next month. They'll be here for eight full days, and they've already booked a hotel (in Insadong), so we can't wander too far from Seoul. Day trips ideas are what I'm after. My dad can't go on hikes, so I'm looking for low-intensity activities.
So far I've come up with "Heyri Art Village," the Korean folk village near Suwon, and Nami Island, but I thought I'd draw on the collective experience and wisdom of the forum.
Thanks!

I have become fond of Morning Calm Park. Take train east to Cheongpyeong I believe? Take a shuttle bus out to the park, walk around for a couple of hours and then head back. Probably better during the week, gets pretty busy on the weekend. |

If hiking is out... what about walking?
Take the ITX train from Yongsan to Chuncheon for some Dalk galbi.
Take any train out of Cheonyeongri station and head in to Gangwon-do or Chungcheongbuk-do. Head to Danyang to see one of the best limestone cave systems in the world. Around danyang, there is a ferry on the lake, too. |

Thanks, all
Nora, walking is fine. It's just strenuous hikes we have to avoid. I didn't know about 고수 동굴 (caves). I definitely want to go myself one day, but it looks like it would involve too much travel for a day trip.
Zyzyfer, the Morning Calm Park looks really nice. There's a good chance we'll do that. Thanks!
DMZ tour is also possible, T-J. Thanks for giving the number.
le-paul, I considered it briefly, but that much travel in a single day seems like it would be really tiring. |

Look around meetup.com to see if there are any day trips organized for the time that they'll be here. Seoul Hiking Group is a great group that has many frequent trips happening. There are lots of others too. |

I second Chuncheon. Take the ferry across the lake to the temple while you're there. It's a nice day-trip.
Also, walk the Suwon Fortress walls. Not strenuous at all. Yeoju is worth a visit too.
You can check out Silleuksa temple and the royal tombs. Only an hour or so by bus from Seoul.
Don't forget that there are lots of interesting things to see and do in Seoul too.
If you had more time, I'd definitely recommend Gyeongju. It's a must-see. Korea's version of Kyoto, although not as impressive IMO. |
