George Jones, the peerless, hard-living country singer who recorded dozens of hits about good times and regrets and peaked with the heartbreaking classic He Stopped Loving Her Today, has died.

He was 81.

Others here will probably have more thoughts on this than I do. I'm pretty sure I once bought one of his CDs as a gift for an uncle.

I actually got turned on to George by a singer in a punk rock band. The guy was a musicologist and claimed that Jones could transmitt more emotion in his voice than anyone. He was around for a long time, started in the rockabilly days. Johnny Cash introduced George to drugs giving him a brown paper bag full of speed.
