Does anyone know how the national insurance relates to cancer coverage? |

Don't quote me on this, but I think most major illnesses require separate insurance for good coverage. I've seen tons of ads for cancer insurance on the subway/bus as well. |

traditionally most people who aren't rich go bankrupt treating cancer in Korea. But I seem to recall the government saying recently they planned to improve the national coverage for cancer and several other major illnesses/treatments. |

I think you are correct that the national insurance plan doesn't give you the right amount of coverage for cancer. I believe that insurance will cover many types of treatment and you would only have to cover 5% of that cost. However, some hospitals may elect or suggest other treatments that do not fall under the national insurance umbrella and you would have to pay those costs in full. I wish I had the specifics for you, but I do not at this moment. |

I'm curious what would happen to an E2 holder if they get cancer, begin treatment, then they reach the end of their contract. What would happen at that point? Their visa will expire, their health insurance will also expire?
(For a CDN returning to Canada, they wouldn't get government coverage for 3 months also.) |

depends on the province, some provinces give you coverage immediately, and in some you can keep your medicare going, even if out of the country for a certain period of time. |

Same in the US. Your Medicare and SSI benefit kicks in when you have a major illness or injury. So if your an American it's best to return home for treatment. |

I understand BC and Ontario both require 3 months.
But I am more interested in the rights of an E2 holder in Korea to remain for treatment, and if that treatment would be provided. |

I heard they'll give you treatment, but they'll strap you to the hospital bed until you pay you share of the bill which can run up to tens of thousand dollars. |

I get regular blood tests and CT scans for a past cancer (hasn't been active in 5 years, fingers crossed). My normal Korean insurance has always covered a majority of the bill. I pay around 10,000 for blood tests and 80,000 for CT scans. The same CT scan costed me 800 US dollars with very good insurance in the states.
No I don't know enough about insurance to know if all school employees have the same kind of insurance across schools. But mine works for me quite well and I'm guessing yours does too. Good luck if you need it, dealing with financial stress and cancer at the same time sucks. |
