|
|
I tried to cancel by calling them beforehand but was told to email and that there were no guarantees I would get another interview.
So I went through with it, with no prep, feeling terrible, and failed.
Surely I had a right to change the date of my interview? I felt terrible - sore throat and a bad stomach.
The emails sent out asking to confirm the date and time they set for the interview don't give any info on what to do if you fall ill, or how to contact Epik in an emergency.
I feel really hard done by. Any advice? They've told me they won't allow me to sit another interview when I'm better. |

It sounds like they've already buried their proverbial head in the sand, so you're basically SOL until next term. I would focus on alternatives like GEPIK if I were you. |

You gave them an impression that you'll be calling in sick. They can't have sick teaching assistants, you know.
Get better. |

Try GEPIK. Your EPIK bridge is burnt.
Look at China.
Vietnam can be pretty lucrative.
Thailand is always an option for anyone who qualifies for an E2.

How was it possible to fail the interview because of "no prep?" |

If you're not picky with location, there's always public school positions opening up throughout the country at off times. Check with Alistair at Korean Horizons. If I remember correctly, he recently was authorized to recruit for all provinces of SK, or at least most of them. He's extremely professional from my experience. I highly recommend him. |

Just out of curiosity what makes you certain you didn't get the job because you were sick? Are you a qualified teacher with experience? Are you American? Are you female? Are you good looking? Not overweight? These are all factors they seem to consider more than what is said in the interview itself. |

Stubborn are we? Good luck with that. I don't know, to answer your question. |

This isn't the end of the world, there are others ways to get a public school job. It's not like you already sent your documents in and can't get them back. I would give up on EPIK and start seeking other ways. Good luck |

Koreans do not look kindly on casual use of sick days, and it is not uncommon to see people who are clearly sick just toughing it out and maybe running off to the hospital during their lunch hour to get a prescription. If someone actually does call in sick, a co-worker will frequently pop in on them, ostensibly to bring them a care package or something, but with the less-than-hidden implication of checking if they're actually sick enough to justify missing work. Given this, I imagine the EPIK policy for rescheduling interviews based on illness is to simply pass on the person, because there's an obvious cultural conflict waiting to happen there. This is something to keep in mind if you continue to pursue employment in Korea. |

Ha Tae Yoon - That bridge is burnt.
Going to the top boss of the pile won't help your case (it is actually detrimental in most cases).
This isn't America and there is no appeal (Confucian - you NEVER question your superior's decision and hope to keep your job; or in your case, get a job).
Go with GEPIK or try for a private hire to a public school.

This is 100% true, but I can't imagine anywhere else in the world where you're going to get away with calling in sick for a job interview. OP, consider this a lesson learned, and good luck finding a job somewhere other than EPIK. |
