Just wondering, how did you peeps answer the questions about
A) your views on discipline in the classroom,
and
B) how you would teach a class with students at different levels of English ability?

A) I would rather focus on rewarding good behaviours than punishing bad ones. I told the interviewer I like to use different kinds of "point systems" depending on the age groups. For younger groups, I have a list of names in a binder, and place a gold star every time they do something good, such as active participation or whatever. After they have a certain amount of stars, they can cash them in for really cute pens, pencils, erasers, keychains, stickers, etc. For middle-school and up, I do the same thing, but I also reward them with special privileges, such as control over what sort of activities we do.
It's better to be very firm with rules in the beginning, and gradually let things slide when necessary, rather than being too nice, too soon.
B) The problem with weaker kids is that the activity may be too difficult for them, leading to them abandoning the activity before even trying, and engaging in disruptive behaviour. The same can be said for stronger students -- they will get bored of an easy lesson, and might be less likely to participate, or they might become disruptive.
The easy solution is groupwork (espcially jigsaws) and activities that can be scaled back and forth. You place the stronger students with weaker ones. The stronger ones will have the added challenge of teaching the weaker ones, and the weaker students will have their learning scaffolded by the stronger student.
I'm not sure if that's what they wanted to hear or not, but I answered as honestly as I could, and got my offer less than 24hrs later. |

"A) I'm of the "beat the student then have a wank" school of thought. I appreciate Korean culture enough to adapt my discipline methods. I may struggle to maintain an erection at first but with the guidance of my co-teachers I'm sure I can improve.
B) I'm just an assistant teacher. The Korean teacher should be taking care of this kind of thing. I just do as I'm told.
On a final note I love kimchi and think Psy is musical genius."
I got offered a job on the spot. |

a and b.
Just avoid words like "interesting" and "funny" and the interviewer wont understand you. They will think you are very smart and they will probably hire you. |
