A new video showing a teacher and student scuffling inside an Oakland classroom is just one example of the safety issues teachers face at the school, according to educators.

The minute-long cellphone video, which Oakland Unified School District said was recorded just before winter break, shows a male substitute teacher attempting to eject a female 8th grader from a classroom at Alliance Academy on 98th Avenue.

The recording, which was made by another student and contains repeated explicit language, then shows the situation escalating into a punching and kicking fight at the door of the room. The teacher then retreats inside and picks up a desk and thrusts it at the child.

During the exchange, the teacher can be heard saying Get your butt out of here then Get the F out of my face and later you dont hit a teacher.

SF - full of hippies!

What that school needs is guns. If every teacher had a gun, that would help improve the students behavior!

That girl is absolute scum. If the compensation culture in America is anything like it sounds I hope that teacher gets some extra money for that

Hehehehe. He was immediately arrested, as per school policy.

I've been doing a lot of substitute teaching at (minority dominated/low-income) middle schools in Springfield, MA, and I can attest to the fact that a lot of profanity, threats of violence, and widespread disrespect of many teachers on the part of many students is pretty common here - as it is in other urban areas with gang influences, high unemployment rates, etc. A recent comprehensive study aimed at dropout prevention measures notes unsafe school cultures at most high schools in the area. http://www.umassd.edu/media/umassdartmouth/seppce/centerforpolicyanalysis/urbaninitiative/reports/SPS_dropout_program_evaluation_FINAL.pdf

Its all just plastering over the cracks.

The west forgot about discipline decades ago and now they're reaping the rewards. A degenerate and crazy society.

A smack to the behind at about age 8 probably would have turned that childs life around.

There are a lot of negative factors that influence (especially) poor urban youth, including parental abuse (or practically no parents), drugs, alcohol, gangs, YouTube videos that glorify violent bullying, bad gangsta rap, and easy access to guns - which tends to rule out re-instituting corporal punishment in schools for fear of getting shot... Of course, most studies indicate that corporal punishment should be used only as a last resort if other forms of discipline don't work http://www.apa.org/monitor/2012/04/spanking.aspx

That teacher is an idiot.
Swearing at and hitting a student.

He may have some defense...but that video is not it.

There's a bizarre mentality in the west.

Victims are blamed. Aggressors are rewarded. Authority is undermined.
