I teach in an international school and have a small group of Korean students in the class. During the pre-test on their weekly spelling words, I read out the word 'yacht'. The Korean students noticeably reacted to the word, explaining that it sounded like I was saying a 'bad word' in Korean. However, they were too uncomfortable to tell me what it sounded like. Could someone explain?

I forgot the s sound in Korean ㅅ makes a T sound when its the last consonant. You'd better not say yacht , say yachteu in future.

That explains it, thanks. The demonstrating mothers was quite a humorous story to go with it.

Well, it does have some connotations to the male part, but ...
connecting 'yacht' with that is quite a stretch (and 'that' is very strech-able by the way). There is a campaign for young people to speak 'nice' this year (instead of trash talking). I'd tell them to get off the gutter.
