Yep, there are hundreds, if not a thousand fitness centres or gyms here in Seoul. For your area, ask your co-workers or go for a walk this weekend and look up. Many are on the 2nd floor and higher of an office tower. Just by walking around my area I found 3 clubs. Have fun.

Gyms with treadmills, bikes and elliptical trainers are ten-a-penny. Literally, Koreans love gyms that are filled with machines. It's once you start looking for decent free weight equipment that you have problems. Heaven forbid you try looking for a gym with an olympic weight-lifting platform.

Wow, there's only one gym in my town and it's just a small gray concrete room with free weights and 1 treadmill. I prefer a stairstepper and Nautilus type of machines in a modern place with big windows and mirrors that has some style or theme to it. I didn't think 60,000 a won a month was worth it as you can buy a free weights set for much less than 600,000 won if using them for just 10 months of the year. You can body build in this small gym, but if it's cardio you need, then it's better to just walk and climb a hill or stair case. I often take a 20 to 30 minute walk instead of taking a taxi when going to a store or my local bus station to get some exercise as I know your heart will grow weak and peter out in your 40's or early 50's if you just sit all the time.

I'm sure Seoul has a glut of gyms. Just ask for help finding one, even if it's your co-teacher. You might also see a sign on a building in English when gazing upward while avoiding getting tramped by traffic. In the city, you just look up and read the buildings to see what's in them.

Seoul Gyms seem to take after gyms in the 70's before the advent of places like Ballys.....just look for the place with buff guy pasted on the window and walk in....followed by the former asian Mr. Fitness owner feeling your muscle, then persumably referring to you as a girly boy in korean.

At least that's what it was like for me....most were small, some were nicer than others....prices are comparatively high given the size, but not bad.

Do a lot of women frequent these gyms? I plan on joining a gym in Seoul but I've heard Korean women don't work out much so my guess is Korean gyms are full of testosterone. Or am I wrong?

You're wrong. Most Korean gyms, especially the ones with lots of running machines and a "hot room", are full of women, young and old.

The cheaper places with old crumbling shower facilities, tattered gym clothes, threadbare towels, and running machines without TVs, usually the same type of place Ukon was talking about (lol, two of my former gyms fit that description perfectly) tend to be more male dominated.

Since I'm a juggler, I've been on a perpetual search for an indoor gym space where I can practice in the winter. For me, this means I need 6 meter ceilings. Indoor basketball or racquetball courts are ideal.

I've been to my local YMCA and they told me the basketball area is for classes only with no open court time. I'm approaching my 3rd winter in Korea and still no real luck.

When I was attending Yonsei last winter, I was able to go into the old unheated gym and practice, but it was not comfortable because it was still really cold.

This year I wll attempt to juggle in Itaewon Station, in the area at the bottom of the long escalator. I figure if I stay in the corner where people don't walk, I'll be okay. My fingers are crossed that I will be permitted to practice.

I know of a gym near Sanggye station, which is next to Nowon St. If you are interested let me know and I'll give you the directions. It is small, and basic, but costs 150,000 won for three months or 60,000 won per month. I went there last year. The gym is close to Sanggye station.

Directions would be nice. Thanks :) Just wondering though, is the inside of the facility clean? And does it have an elliptical machine?

I live in SeokGye, so this would mean I would have to do a couple transfers on the subway to get to and from Sanggye. And I don't want to be all gross and sweaty in public lol. I'm still going to check out that gym... but anyone else know of any near my place? (i'm going to go look for some this weekend, but just in case someone on the forum knows of one).

The gym is clean, and it has about six treadmills. The gym is smallish, but workable. Directions: Sanggye Station Exit 2 (walk down the street where the faces shop is on the corner. Just keep walkig out of exit 2 down the street. Keep walking till the end, turn left, and in the first apt building, go to 2nd floor.

I'd suggest walking around your area, looking for gyms. Happy Hunting!

My kingdom for a squat/power rack! I've settled on zerkers and clean, front squat, but only on my zerkers can I lift heavy cause I can't clean as much as I can squat.

It's the worst of both worlds. No vixens and no testosterone.

If there's men then there is testosterone, no? I just hate it when I go to a gym with mostly men. They're all lifting weights and making all these ungodly sounds while fluffing up their feathers as if it was peacock mating season. I like to use the weights more than doing cardio so I have to work out amongst them. I once thought a guy was having sex in the weight room because that's exactly what he sounded like to me. Oh, and women go to gyms to work out, not to meet men...since we're all sweaty and stinky in there. Unless he's cute of course. Then exceptions can be made!
