So as you all know (I�m sure lots of you don't)  Thursday 6th June is a 'red letter' day - so no school, yay.
Lots of schools will also be closed on the Friday too (7th) but this is down to the Principal to decide.....
Does anyone know yet if they're getting the Friday off too?

My middle school is using a discretionary holiday on that friday.
Thats according to the school year calendar they issued a couple weeks into the semester. Every public school has one of these. No need to wonder -- ask for a copy. |

You know what happens quite often when a GT posts here about getting an "extra day" off?
- Other GTs get peeved and whine about it here.
- At least one other GT gets so peeved about it, he or she whines about it, sometimes even in writing, to the provincial/metropolitan city Office of Education.
- Said OE issues a directive requiring all principals in the province/metro to ensure the GT is, in fact, on the school premises for that day. This directive sometimes includes a requirement for a district OE school inspector to visit the schools in their district to verify the GT is there all day.
- Then the smart GTs, the ones who didn't brag about getting a non-red day off even though their principal had originally given them the day off, get screwed and lose that day, along with every other GT in the province/metro.
Let's hope it doesn't happen this time. |

Not true. This is a situation that is different from the Principal just telling the FT to take the day off. The OP is talking about an additional school holiday, for all teachers and students. All schools have these discretionary holidays, the purpose of which is to round out holiday weekends like the one in question. |

I thought you worked at a girls high school? You got transferred to middle school? How would you compare middle school to high school? (I ask because my friend is thinking of making the switch.) |

Also, and maybe more importantly-
This year Children's Day falls on a Sunday 5/5. I've read that Korean legislation is currently trying to pass a bill allowing 3 day weekends in such a case.
Thus Monday might be a holiday, if the law passes in time. Of course, business unions, and bosses around the country are trying to block it from passing.
Anyone else hear about this? |

All middle school this year (last year I taught elementary, middle, & high every week).
Middle school is my specialty & favorite, its a fun & challenging age group. Highschoolers tend to be calmer & more thoughtful but many are constantly exhausted. |

I should add, if you do leave the country - (assuming you have the Friday off too), you should tell your school and have them sign it off first!
Also - ask if they are deducting 1 day from your hol allowance, or just giving you the day off......

| If your school is closed for a discretionary holiday, that applies to native speaker teachers too. No vacation deduction. Every school has to provide x number of instructional days per school year & schools may vary on which specific extra off-days they provide but your regular semester teaching days should be the same as other subject teachers. At least thats my experience. |
