| 3) Pay. 2.1 is by no means bad, but because of the location of the school (see below), you end up forking out 11,000W per week taking the bus to work. That's about half a million over the course of the contract. No reimbursement is offered in the contract. It's not a huge amount of money every month but it's noticeable and shouldn't be up to the foreign teacher to pay. |
Why on Earth should the school pay for a teachers commute costs?? In fact, what employer pays for this?
The rest of your review was quite good and will prove useful to anyone considering working there. Well done. |

| The school should pay the teacher's commute costs simply because the apartment is (by the employer's choice) a very long way from the school. We're talking 5 miles at least. The employee has no choice but to take the bus which costs money. If we were to take your reasoning to the extreme, would it be fair of the employer to put the teacher in some remote village somewhere and expect them to cover the cost of a commute? I think not. The school is saving money by the apartment being so far away, and this money-saving will end up costing the foreign teacher over $500 during the year. Thus, the school should at least contribute a little. |
That is quite the stretch.
There is always the option of the non-housing contract if you prefer it. That way you choose where your housing is located and the school typically provides a monthly housing allowance and sometimes forks over the key money /deposit.
At the end of the day, since you brought up choice, it is and remains the employees choice to work somewhere under certain conditions. If the commute is deemed too far then aid employee can certainly choose to pursue other employment opportunities.
Still, as I said, good review overall and it could be useful to prospective teachers as it is pretty level-headed and balanced. |

With all the surprise cleaning fees and stuff they charged you for,
sheeshk. Oh well, they nickle and dime you with garbage like that,
but at least you got paid, right?
You'd be surprised at how many places can't even say that much. |

| Most teachers who live out there would be more than happy to live in the city and save themselves a fortune on taxis, most schools don't do this as most apartments in that area are pretty cheap. The school was probably trying to be nice by putting you downtown. |

Update:
As I anticipated, the 100,000won fee for a "cleaning service" was in fact used for no such thing. This has been confirmed. This means the boss stole 100,000won from me. Proceed with caution and don't take any sh!t. |
What was it used for? |
