If I take a 4G smartphone home with me, would I be able to use it in the UK?

Just sign a new contract with one of the UK phone companies?

If it is possible, is it even worth it?

I believe 4G will be a problem as different carriers and countries use different bands for 4G. 3G GSM will most likely work, but it's unlikely the 4G will. Is the phone unlocked?
