|
|
I didn't have health insurance or pension at my previous school, so when I interviewed at my current hagwon, I emphasized how much I would really like to have the national health insurance and pension. I was given the choice to have a salary of 2.3 million with no pension/national health insurance, or 2.2 with those. I chose the option of 2.2 with national health insurance and pension.
I went to a local clinic this morning to get a referral to a specialist, after SNU Bundang Hospital said I would need the referral in order to be covered by the national health insurance. The doctor said he looked it up on the computer and I don't have insurance.
Anyone working at a hagwon should try to find out ASAP if you have health insurance. Ask a clinic, not your boss. This is two schools in a row where I haven't had health insurance, and I doubt I have pension either. |

If you don't have the NHIC booklet you DON'T have NHIC medical.

Your contract does not include health insurance coverage? |

LOL... EVERY contract does... but actually getting it is another matter (in spite of the fact that it is required by law and usually ignored by hagwons).
That is a big part of the complaints about hagwon work and for a large number of reasons the employers can get away with it.

labor board won't do anything - not their jurisdiction.
Take your proof of employment (as an employee) to the NHIC and file a complaint.
They will require you to pay ALL of your outstanding premiums backdated from the time you entered Korea.
Then and only then will they go after the employer for their contributions.
If the employer claims you are a "subcontractor" then you still may not get it without paying that part of the premiums too - more likely you will simply get fired.
The same will happen with the pension office (NPS)

My contract includes NHIC and pension. During the job interview, my boss offered me a 2.3 million won per month salary without NHIC and pension. When I said I would really like to have those, she said that would be fine, but my salary would be 2.2 million. We agreed to that and my contract says my salary is 2.2 million with NHIC and pension.
It ends up that I don't have insurance (and presumably pension) despite taking the lower salary.
I'm going to go ahead and go to the doctor on Tuesday and will have tests run at some point thereafter, since it's still much cheaper to do it here uninsured than in the USA with insurance. But after the February 20th payday, I would like to change jobs.

In your opinion, do you think I would be able to switch to a D10 under these circumstances without a LOR from my boss? |

Hi there. I just called the NHIC because I was never given a booklet, but they said I am covered. What does this mean?

It takes a while to get the booklet.
It also takes a while to actually get registered and into the system. If you are new to Korea you can pay the doc and then when you get the card just go back & claim back the difference between the fee and the amount you should have paid with insurance. |

If you are covered, you don't need a booklet. You only need to show your ARC and they can look you up on the system.
Not having a booklet doesn't mean you are not covered. They don't send them out to everyone like they used to. |

I went the first eight months of my contract without health insurance, but now I have two booklets. But all that needs to be shown to the hospital is the ARC card. It's all in the computer system. |

this is true, couple of years ago i had to go to the emergency room with an injury at 10p on a friday night and all they asked for was my arc and they could look me up, it was no hassle |

But if you don't have a booklet, don't assume you have coverage, because you might not. The hospital will enter your ARC info, and inform you you have no coverage, and ask for your visa card or cash before treatment. |
