I know some people who left Korea and went west (past China to the Arabian Gulf). Why don't more people go to the Gulf and not China if $$$ and travelling is their thing? Both are really good in the Gulf. If not chained to booze and clubbing AND are OK with the weather, it is a good place to go (but not for newbies). I'd recommend Korea vets to head for the Gulf.

The UAE is not a great place for a lot of people. Its still a deeply Muslim nation and you have to be on your guard not to do stupid stuff or you could end up in hot water. Which you'll be used to anyway because you will boil in the UAE.

Plus, they pretty much only want TESOL certified male teachers.

You primarily are forbidden to sell or obtain alcohol in Saudi Arabia. The other places in the Gulf have it. You can obtain alcohol in Saudi Arabia if you live in a compound, but that doesn't apply to anybody here. You wouldn't be making near enough to live on a compound, at least most teachers wouldn't be making enough.

You can get jobs in the other countries in the Gulf as easily as Saudi Arabia, but they just don't pay as well.

I'm curious where you got this information? I know several people who went on to Saudi Arabia who all live in compounds that their schools provided. I had a job lined up there at point in time as well and was being provided housing within a compound.

And the one person I know who's working in Saudi Arabia doesn't live in a compound.

He's also a heavy drinker and blows his cash on trips to Dubai.

Seriously, you have to be a weirdo to want to move to and work in a country where there's no booze or women to date, or even look at. Big F that, that sounds miserable.

I got high paying offers to work in both the UAE and in China (not ESL) and turned both of them down, although at younger time in my life I would have probably accepted them. I don't think UAE would be too bad if you were making good money and could afford to travel, but the middle east as a whole is too oppressive for my tastes.

No, no I live in a "compound" too. I have my own apartment in an apartment building and there is a small store at the gas station across the highway, where I run across to get there.
