|
|
Every now and then, my girlfriend's face gets really red on her cheeks and neck after drinking cheap alcohol here (Captain Q, long islands, Emart gin). This isn't the rosy cheek "Asian flush" reaction that Koreans get, as she is Caucasian and this doesn't usually happen when we drink. It's only when we're drinking on the cheap. It's almost like hot rectangles or lines on her cheeks. Now, our friend from America came to visit us this week, and she has gotten the same reaction - red, well defined blotches on her face and neck. Has anyone else experienced this? Obviously, it's a reaction to chemicals in the booze. Does anybody know or care to speculate what causes this? |

No idea...but I will say that Captain Q is a surprisingly decent rum considering the price. |

I had this happen after drinking a few OB Golden.
The right side of my face, neck and the tops of my shoulders were all red and blotchy. Hasn't happened again but it was worrying at the time. |

I hear Korean booze has chemicals that sped up the fermentation process but can wreak havoc when nursing a hangover. |

the "asian flush" is not only found in asians as misleading as the name is. it's a protein deficiency that prevents the liver from properly breaking down acetaldehyde (the poison in alcohol) which in turn gives the famous redness that many asians do suffer from.
if she's experiencing this it most likely isn't because an alcohol is "cheaper" or not, it's most likely because she's drinking at a faster rate than her liver can process the acetaldehyde in the alcohol she is imbibing. |

That may seem reasonable. But again, this effect does not occur with most alcohol. She's fine if drinking wine, beer, or decent spirits. It only happens whenever we drink cocktails with really cheap stuff (which happens to be what most bars here use), and sometimes it only takes one. So I really don't think it's because we drink cheap Emart gin faster than Bombay. I've drunk with Koreans before, and it doesn't look the same at all.
It's probably what yaya described, and they just cut corners to produce it at a lower cost. |

She's lying about something. Raid her house to find her stash of cough syrup and codeine.
Someone else, biopsy her liver.
The rest of you, test for Lupus, Sarcoidosis, Hemochromatosis. |

Not good. I don't know the ages of the people involved but you should take better care of yourself, and stop drinking anything that causes any kind of negative reaction. If you have to pay more for the better stuff then do it. Your health is more fragile than you realize. |

Slightly off-topic, but I have heard in the news several years back of some elderly (of course) men (of course) in Suncheon who died (of course) from drinking Maekkoli they found in the street (of course) in summer (of course).
Were the bottles poisoned? Possibly. They could have been forgotten and got skunked as well.
This blog post has a related article, though I recall reading a different article at the time.
