I just lent a Korean friend a good bit of money and will be holding some of her stuff as collateral until she repays me on the 5th of June. The problem is I will be in the US on vacation at that time. So, I need to be able to check my balance here in Korea to verify repayment so I can then return her documents by courier.

I bank with Shinhan presently and haven't set up an online banking profile yet. I tried that once with my previous bank, Woori, a few years ago and it was just tooooo confusing. Is there a simple way to check my balance here in the ROK from abroad?

I don't have shinhan, but online is the simplest way. Go in to a branch and have them explain it to you. I personally find the smartphone apps easier to use than the actual websites (at least with KB and KEB).

It's probably easiest if you get a Korean friend to help you set up your online banking. It requires the download of a security certificate, which can be a bit of a PITA. You need the security cert. on your computer even if you plan to check your account on your smartphone. Once it's all installed, checking your account is easy. It's just the initial set up you might need help with.

You can upload the security certificate to a computer, a smartphone, or a flash drive (my choice personally) and then it can be used on any computer anywhere as long as you have Internet. The smartphone option is good, but if you do not have roaming on your phone, then it can be worthless. IMO
