I am living in a sleepy Korean town and looking to GET OUT for the weekends. I am thinking of going to Busan, and visiting Gwangju and Daejon. But does anyone know about friendly expat bars in these cities, where I am likely to meet Western people? If possible, could you give me clear directions as to how to get to those bars. This is kind of necessary. I just want to have a drink and meet new people. I know it's possible to have enormous fun in this country sometimes.
I teach in a public school. The job is relatively unstressful, and that's a great blessing. But, although there are some western people where I am, they are not very communicative. Things are very spread out.
Ten years ago, I was in a hagwon in Jecheon, a small, compact city.. I wouldn't recommend the school, but the city was fine. I got in with a group of western people that was quite friendly and close knit. Korean people also spoke to me, even when they knew very little English and I made some Korean friends. Where I am now, the Koreans are RESERVED. It's like rural Japan.
But I know that if I can get out to the cities at the weekends, that's going to make me feel a whole lot better.

In Daejeon, take a taxi to Timeworld Paris Baguette. Cross over the road to the area where there are lots of shops and bars. Walk straight down the street in front of you. There is a Ho Bar at the end. Turn right there and keep walking straight until you feel like you are almost leaving the nightlife. On the left will be Cantina, a Mexican themed pub that is very popular with expats and has decent live music most weekends.

In Busan you have lots of choices...

Try PNU, there are a few expat bars there.

Try Kyungsung Dae...a lively district with a few good expat bars.

Try Gwanganlee beach area, some good expat friendly pubs and bars there too.

Somyeon has some too...
