A D10 issued in country as a change of status typically has a 6 months length of sojourn and to the best of my knowledge is NOT extendable (you need to find work and change back to a work visa or leave the country).

The maximum time allowed out of the country is 90 days.

Friend received the D-10 and the time was 3 months for him. Perhaps they have different rules for different situations, but my friend was told by immigration that he only had 3 months to find new employment.

Perhaps they are tightening it up since it shouldn't take more than a month to find a new job? It is, however, news to me.

I haven't heard of a policy change but I am not exactly one of the policy makers or on the list of "need to know" individuals at immigration either.

All that said, immigration officers do have some leeway in determining change of status and length of sojourn as well.
