What should you go after first in certifications? If I want to get a certification, should I start with a TESOL or a CELTA or is there a prerequisite to attain certain certifications? I'm planning on investing the money to get certified this year. I've already been teaching for 2 years now, but I'm seeing that I better have some actual qualifications in the near future.

CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is a TESOL cert.
It is the brand name of the TESOL cert offered by Cambridge ESOL.
http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/

TESOL, TESL and TEFL certs are virtually synonymous terms for the same thing (30 day, 120 hour, intensive, basic learn how to teach ESL/EFL).

As you move up the qualification scale the TESOL cert is followed by either a DELTA (3-6 months and modular) or
DipTESOL (6-12 months)
(these tend to be more practical in nature)

and/or

a MA.TESOL (more theoretical in nature) and usually followed by applications to work in the tertiary sector

and/or

PGCE followed up by teacher certification (may then be followed by M.Ed /Ed.D) leading to mainstream teaching rather than just ESL/EFL.

Wow, thanks for that information. I think I'll be hitting that track to level up.
