Hello eslcafe!!

long time lurker, first time poster here - hope you're all well.

I have been in Korea for 3 weeks and everything is going fine so far. The only thing I really miss from home (London, UK) is an active non-K pop electronic music scene.

I'm really into aggressive Hard dance music, primarily Jungle, Drum & Bass and Hardtek. I know this is a long shot but has anyone heard of any nights out here that might cater to my tastes?
I just figure that in a country of 50 million people there must be some kind of underground... right?

Had a lot of luck with the punk and hardcore scene here which still seems to be live and kicking but doesn't quite tick the right boxes.

All the best!

Eloy

Oi Oi,
you wanna search for a cru/night called ' low end theory' on FB they run nights in the city every 4/6 weeks. At the moment most nights are in a small place called dojo lounge in hbc(haebongchong , beside itaewon), free in and cheap drinks. The main guy is jpath and he used get international djs( friction, commix, goldie, fabio etc) over in bigger clubs in gangnam/hongdae, but the crowds weren't great. High contrast was over a couple months back and the crowd seemed to be considerable larger so maybe koreans are getting their act together music wise and we get some more international acts over.

There are some other guys running a night in a small bar in hongdae called 'vent'. It's usually on friday night and 20,000 in with free cocktails for 2 hours I think.

The next in dojo lounge is April 20th I think,
hit me up on pm if you want more info.

awesome, I was about to ask this myself. I've liked Low End Theory on facebook, but I don't see any upcoming events. Hopefully they message their page fans before it happens!

Hey guys,

There's actually quite a lot going on in Seoul in terms of D&B and other bass music. I'm a drum & bass DJ from the UK and I came out to Seoul in August last year. I've been playing at nights every couple of weekends since my first weekend here.

LET has finished now unfortunately. They did their last night the other week. But there are lots of other things still going on.

Probably the biggest crew / night in Seoul is BassAttack.

It's a Korean-run night which is ALWAYS really busy (big venues too), which is nice. They play all forms of bass music, so expect dubstep and trap and all sorts of stuff as well as D&B. But there's a good few D&B residents too, including myself, and there's D&B at all events. They play in many clubs all over Seoul so just check the facebook.

There's another night called Filthy Friday which is usually at Vent in Hongdae. It's every month and it's good vibes. If you're a DJ you can also get a set here pretty easily.

Also, I've just started a new night at Dojo (former haunt of LET) with LET residents Helix and MC Lucid, called DMZ. This is a D&B only night (the only one I know of in Seoul), catering for the deeper side of things but we've got guests every month so u can expect a reasonable cross section of styles (of d&b). The next one is 13th July.

Also, summer is coming, so there'll be some beach parties coming up! I got here just in time for these last year and they were great.

Look out for Korea Burn too.

So aye, lots of stuff happening, probably other stuff I forgot to mention too... but this should get you started! Hit me up if you need any further info!

Thanks for the informative post Special Ed, glad this thread is still getting some attention!

Sounds like some good nights, especially interested in these beach parties - are they likely to come up on the walls of the Facebook groups you posted?.

Listened to the tunes on the DMZ wall and promo mixs, seems a bit ambient for my tastes - But to be honest I doubt the really scummy aggressive bass music I went out to at home will ever reach Korea :p

No problem! It was my first question when I got here too!

Yeah DMZ definitely aims at the deeper side of d&b. You'll definitely find some nosebleed stuff at BassAttack, usually more so on the dubstep side of things though... and you're right, I've not come across anything too crusty since I got out here. I draw the line at hardtek myself, sounds a bit too much like a kitchen falling off a cliff to me! Very Happy

You'll definitely find info on the beach parties on all of the above facebook walls! Not heard anything myself yet but I know there's some in the pipeline. They tend to be fairly small affairs but they're good banter and a good way to meet people.

Here's the info for Korea Burn though: https://www.facebook.com/events/398917536882802/?fref=ts

Hey Ed,

Any word on any international djs coming back to Seoul in the future? Andy C a few weeks back was a quality night.

Hey man,

I've not heard about anything, but after Andy C and High Contrast I imagine something will be in the pipeline!

I think it's a night called Junglist that ran both of them, don't know much about it apart from that they seem to run one-off nights every now and then.

Imagine they'd have to stick to the big names to get their money back... I didn't make Andy C but High Contrast was a fantastic night eh.
