So I got my F5 this week. I have two questions if you don't mind.
Is there a residency requirement in order to maintain my status?
Do I have a to renew it. I noticed there was no expiration date? |

It doesn't expire but they told me something about needing a re-entry permit if I was outside of Korea for more than a year. |

You do not need to renew every 2 years, as with the F-2 or whatever it's known as now.
That said, if you live abroad I believe you need to visit Korea once every two years in order to keep it active. |

Sorry, none of these answers were very helpful. What does "keeping it active" mean? How would they know?
Anyone else with actual F5 can help me out? |

"You have to be in the country at least once every two years" isn't helpful?
How would they know? Well you know when you pass through that magical place called immigration at the airport and they take your passport, what did you think they were doing with it? Dusting it for you?
They're tracking your entry and exit into the country. They know how long are you are in and out of the country. |

Why is it that so many people with an F2 or F5 visa never ask immigration about these things? |

I got mine years ago... and have never contacted Immi since. If they changed the rules, I'd be hooped... but I just carry on hoping that my F5 stays the way it is. |

Immigration explained everything to me when I got the F5. They asked me if I had any questions. All done.
I get the feeling that many people are focused only on getting the visa and running out the door as quickly as possible, without any idea of the rules concerning their visa. Perhaps immigration should educate them. |

Considering their operating hours and how long they take, yeah, I would say I'm always in a hurry every time I go there because I have to get my butt back to work. |

Very, very difficult. It was a year long process. I studied for and took the TOPIK twice, plus the paper work. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm the only white guy to get an F5 this month. |
