A Korean friend and I have decided to write a book regarding foreigners in Korea.
The Title (as now) is Korea Love it And Hate it.......
byline; the things foreigners love about Korea and those they hate.
Anything is fair game, but try to keep your descriptions to less than five sentences.
We are shooting for a copuple thosand juicy ones. It can be anything from highbrow Silla court poetry, and low-low brow like the way Ajasshis slap their knees after that first bottle of soju.
Please send any of you most insightful, either love or hate.
to the following ADDREESS: [email protected]
We will be using time stamps on all e-mails, so if there is something you really want to get included in our book, do as they do, pali pali. First come first published (whjent will the spit hit the floor?)
ASLO!! VERY IMPORTANT
If you want to give a signature you can. You can be anonymous as well. I think for the Korean readers benefit it would be interesting to get small bits of info as to who the writer is
for example: I love the way K-girls put on lipstick on the subway-Tom American-19
or I hate the way K-girls put on lipstick on the subway Lisa34England.
I think a general basic sign might include such tidbits as age, home country, and how long in Korea.
But feel free to improvise, for example if you are mentioning a horseback ride on Jeju, feel free to mention you grew up on a horse farm. Whatever would bring more insight and meaning to your blurb is fine. And again, total annoynymity is ok as well.
If you could, please cut, paste and forward this to your friends in Korea, or those who are out but used to be in. All responses will be kindly acknowledged. And any that will be included in the final book will be notified as well. And given some sort of discount on it, we aew still in planning with the publisher.
Oh, and if any of you know some foreigners outside of the ESL world, please forward this to them, it would be great to get input from all countries, and walks of life. Different generations would be cool too, if you know any 6 year-old Canadian kids for example.
Let your insights be read for generations of Koreans. This is your chance,
Take care, and Thanks for your time and help. I hope this project can be a bridge-builder and a knee-slapper. The publisher is thinking of making it a bilingual book. We'll see Take care

I've already received several e-mails, Thank's for your input.
The Publisher is looker for 1001 good things (i love >>>>>about Korea) and 999 bad things.
Again, let us lknow if you want your thoughts published annoybnously or with a biographil scetch (age, home country)
Thanks all- |

Unoriginal and boring.
Go with the one in your thread title: LoveHateKorea
Original, snappy, interesting.
That's free advice from a journalism award winner for his headline writing. Why am I in Korea then? You try to be (chief) editor on a community newspaper and put in less than 70 hours a week without sacrificing your standards. It's no life for an aspiring book writer like myself.
I'll PM some stuff for you to use. When is your deadline? |

So basically you want the people on this forum to write this book for your Korean friend, while he reaps the profit from it (if there is any). |

Don't you find that ratio a little odd? |

Do we get royalties?
---------------------------
My book will be better than your book. And it will be published first. AND I won't have to milk material.
Just kidding, bro. However, get a spell-checker. |

Not at all.
First of all my Korean friend is a "she" and she is helping me to write the book.
The idea for the book is mine and comes from the fact that most non-Koreans that I have met over the years (going on 6) have many unique insightful opinions about Korea....but they tend to leave after one or two years...... and their unique observations, both positive and negative, are lost.
That's why I would love for people to e-mail anyone they know who once lived in korea.....and have since returned to their home countries....to recall their love and hates of this unigue country....when they experienced tham (1983....1990....1997.....2001)
Considering how quickly Korea changes, I would love to include obsevations of people who lived here many years ago. |

Sundubuman, I saw your e-mail address, but I would rather share with the whole group.
no sexual abuse hysteria
the demand for foreign English teachers
Koreans speaking to me in English
no Taco Bell |

I said neither that it was a bad thing to do, nor that I wouldn't help. Just pointing out the truth of the matter. |

Korean: Korea has four seasons.
Me: My country has four seasons.
Korean: No. Korea has four seasons.
Me: Actually, the weather in Korea sucks. You guys have two seasons. Terribly hot and terribly cold. Eat yeot! Bye now. |

I assume the "I hate" section will cover 99% of the book, and the "I love" section, written by Koreans, will fill the last couple of pages....just to keep it realistic... |

Newfie,
I am not trying to get people to "write my book". After 6 years, I myself could knock off both a thousand love/hates (as several of us could).
The point is to not just share MY opinion. Too many of such books take one writer's viewpoint. I would like 1000 viewpoints, from a broad range of age groups and cultures. Another point is to get people the chance to memorialize their thoughts about Korea in a proper book aimed at Koreans, not just at a web board aimed at expats. If you have an ax too grind, if you were too verklemft on a day you wanted to hug a haraboji at Tapkol Park, or you never got the nerve to grimace at a crazed busdriver, this is your chance.
I had the idea after several Korean friends of mine told me they thought it was interesting to rread Dave's disscussion boards because they felt they could get foreigner's real takes on Korea, not just what their ESL teacher blathers on about in class about a kimchimaking episode at the Folk Village.
Too much real discussion about Korea takes place behind closed doors and secret beer parties.
I just think it's time to share.
Again, anything sent to the address [email protected] can either be totally anonymous, totally credited, or any combo therein.
I will ask the publisher if I will be able to get free copies for contributors. If he believes strongl enough in the book, a few hundred at least might be possible. Might make for a nice souvenir? |
