Hello,

I am thinking of doing the CELTA course and then teach in Korea. I don't have any teaching experience, so I was wondering what the job prospects would be like as opposed to without (I do have a TEFL Advanced 120 online certificate however!Smile

Thanks for the advice!

CELTA is not a requirement for getting a job in Korea. For a job in Korea you have to have at least an Associates degree or better yet a bachelor's degree. The CELTA will help you to know what ESL learners need to be given, or what the contents of a good lesson is.

If you have a Canadian passport and a degree from a Canadian University then having or not having a CELTA (Cambridge brand of TEFL/TESOL cert) won't make any difference.

If you don't have a university degree (bachelor) then your chances are effectively "0".

I do have a degree from a Canadian university.
It's a shame the CELTA doesn't provide better job prospects as it is quite a lot of money to throw down.

CELTA is an entry level qualification for jobs in most countries. Korea is one of the few exceptions and that's why it's popular with the people who only want to teach for a year or two. If you want to make a real career/living out of TEFL you should start with a CELTA then upgrade to a DELTA or an MA at some stage and they cost a lot more than you've just spent. If your intention was just to teach in Korea for a year or two then do something else, in terms of job prospects, you've wasted your money.

Maybe it would be a better idea to do a year in korea first to see how I would like teaching English, as I really don't know at this point, having never done it. If I then wanted to pursue it as a career I could then do the CELTA.
