What's with the low salaries (e.g., W2.0 million at Daegu Univ). In 1996, they were offering almost the same salary (when I was there).
What's going on?

Inflation, job market, influx of foreign teachers, and the basic ability to get away with it. If the school can find someone who will do it for 2 mill, then they will.
Also for some Universities, it is the hours. So 2 mil for 12 or 14 hours a week of work is OK to me |

If you assume the mean inflation rate between 1996 and 2013 is 3.5% (in ROK), a W2million salary paid in 1996 is worth W3.7million in 2013. Conversely, the W2 million salary in 2013 is actually worth W1,076,722.
Thus, the univ salary has decreased 54% since 1996. It looks like someone is making a lot of money (on the backs of foreign EFL teachers)!

Yes, maybe I was being a bit glib with the term inflation. I think 1996 rates where very high, that was before the IMF crash. After 1997 things got really low, then stabilized for again.
Remember I would say before 2005 coming to Korea was a bit special. Now any idiot with a half a clue and a capable recruiter can get here. The cowboy era of ESL teachers in Korea ended in the early 2000s.
Anyways, this post is just a variation that will expand and start the whole the job market situation in Korea debate. It is very multifaceted and not always a simple answer. |

The 2.0 salary wouldn't be so bad if they weren't making such ridiculous demands:
| Quote: |
Minimum Qualifications:
M.A. in any subject + 2 years university teaching experience
B.A. in any subject + 4 years university teaching experience
Please note that 1 year of experience in a public school setting is equal to .8 years university experience.
1 year of experience in a private academy is equal to .5 years university experience. Experience earned while completing a degree program is not counted.
Applicants who fail to meet these basic requirements will not be considered. All qualifications must be completed at the time of application. Female applicants holding an M.A. are strongly preferred and will be given first consideration. |

Wow only 6 more years of working at a hogwon and I'll be illegible to move up to University level where I can be a real professor. The way I see it, it's only a little more time that I would need to get a PHD back home and I can work and save money while doing it instead of getting myself deeper into debt while getting a PHD. |

I encourage you to get that PHd while you teach in Korea. Don't waste your time with going out every night. Invest in your future. But do the PHd in a subject that you are interested in and will bear fruit later on.

Haha, you're worried about the salary? I would be more concerned about the fact that a female MA holder will be "considered first". Stops me from applying. Haha
Actually the salary is much higher than you suggest because teaching over one of the 8 week vacations can net the teacher an extra 1-2 months salary equavalent and also during semesters it is likely that you would be asked to teach more than 12 hours per week. So of course the total package would probably be in the range 2.5 - 3 million won all depending on how much you wanted to work.
Not bad if you are an MA holding woman~ |

| I wonder who would get top preference- a man holding an MA or a woman holding a BA? (I can't help but think it might be the woman with the BA >_<) God help us if there is but one female with an MA who applies. Us guys will stand almost no chance of getting the job. |

| No matter how you look at it, 2.0 million won is a very low salary. It may seem high compared to a hagwon job because the teaching hours are far fewer and the vacation time is far greater, but compare apples to apples here: There are plenty of university positions with much higher pay. |

*You're still a loser.
I get plenty of respect here, from my co-workers, parents, kids, etc. Maybe the problem is you?
And are you saying every teacher in every country in the west is respected?? Please... |
