I'm not sure of some of the better places, however I was told you need a Korean License for most whilst a small number will accept an International License. However if you have neither you might be unable to rent.

Check the Jeju Tourism and the Jeju Airport websites.

I went to Jeju during the middle of April and I hired a little Matiz for 96,000 for 5 nights/return on the 6th morning. I used a total of three tanks of LPG at about 30,000 per full tank and we did alot of driving around...
We rented from AJ Rentacar online. They took us to their depot from the airport via shuttle bus, and again back to the airport on our final day...

I rented my car through Avis. Brand new, clean car and the GPS allowed you to enter your destination's phone number so it was a lot easier than typing in Hanguel. We took their shuttle bus from the airport to their off-site location and were in our car in about 10 minutes.

Here's some of the info I get via e-mail:

You must provide these three stuffs when you picking up the car :
- Bring any valid drivers license issued by in your country.
- Valid International Drivers License. [Group B]
- Passport.
If you intend to rent outside your home country, you may also be required to present an International Driver's Permit. International Driver's Permits are valid only if presented with the original local license. An International Driver's Permit it not acceptable by itself.
For more information, please call 82-2-862-2847[ext. 1 or 2].

Tel: 82-2-862-2847(Ext. 1 or 2) Fax: 82-2-6240-0777

Costs:
New SM3 1600 AT (Gasoline, Automatic Transmission)
4 days [96Hrs; From SEP 10 to SEP 14],
1. Rental Price : 285,600 KRW [Must included insurances such as PAI, ALI, PEP]
2. The normal CDW[Optional] : 36,000 KRW
3. The super CDW[Optional] : 57,600 KRW
4. Currently, English GPS is not available. However, we are able to reserve Korean GPS(spoken by Korean) for free in your journey, if request.

We rented las summer (a brand new SUV) and I had an international drivers permit.

We reserved from Canada through avis and had no problems. Picked the SUV up at the airport and dropped it off there when we left.

For the record, driving in Jeju was easy and stress free when compared to driving in Busan or Seoul!

They only required I bring my International Driving permit (they did not ask for my canadian drivers liscence) and my passport. We purchased extra insurance just in case and even had a child seat reserved for our daughter. All that was done online.

As a side note, some friends of ours (foreign couple) rented a car in Jeju for later this month and got a really cheap rate as it was part of a rental package with Phoenix Island hotel & resort.

Maybe that is worth checking out.

That's a pretty big difference between the Avis rates and the AJ Rentacar rates. Were you happy with the car and service, Stavviod? Do they accept International Driver's Licenses or just Korean licenses, or do you know?

I'm thinking about hitting up Jeju this summer, but I don't have a Korean or International license (though I do have my license from back home) and don't want to go if I can't rent a car.

Spaceman, from what I know you will need either an international driving liscence/permit OR a Korean liscence to rent a car. Your home country drivers liscence will not be sufficient (unless I am wrong).

By the way, getting an internationa permit is quite easy but I do not know the procedure to get one from abroad.

So if you wish to be sure of being able to rent a car, get your International permit, bring your passport (you will need it).

Be aware also that if you've been here more than a year (I'm guessing you have from your join date), that you can only legally drive in Korea on a Korean licence.

It's very likely that you could get away with renting a car using just an IDP backed up by your home country's licence (that you probably wouldn't be asked for) and using your passport as ID, giving your home country address.

Moreover, even if you did as you legally should and exchanged your home country licence for a Korean one, some rental companies wouldn't accept your Korean licence until you'd had it for a year. They won't rent to anyone with less than a year's driving experience and their booking systems can't distinguish between someone who's just passed their driving tests in Korea and someone (possibly very experienced) who's just switched another country's licence for a Korean one.

So I'd say your choice is either the white lie of IDP + home licence + passport and pretend you're here as a tourist; or the completely legal route of getting a Korean licence and renting from one of the (usually smaller) companies who don't require 1+years on the Korean licence since it was obtained.

If you're not going to drive in Korea other than your Jeju trip, the white lie option is probably the least hassle....as long as you can avoid accidents or being stopped by the police, which most people do. And even if you were stopped by the police, pleading ignorance would likely see them let you off. But it's still worth being aware of the legal situation.

Thanks to both of you for the info, especially to you, b-class rambler. After doing a little more research, it seems that I'd have to return to the U.S. to get a UDP, so that pretty much makes that a non-option. I've also found out that Americans now need some kind of apostille from their home state to have their licenses recognized, which is just too much work for me, and so I'm thinking about just taking the entire Korean driving test.

Unfortunately, that brings me to the policy you mentioned some companies have about not renting to people who've had their license for less than a year. Do you happen to know the names of any of the smaller companies that might be more flexible about that policy if I could show them my U.S. license along with my Korean one? I've been driving for over 15 years now.

Either way, I really appreciate the advice and info.

Really? That seems harsh if so. In the UK, either of the main motoring organisations will accept postal applications for an IDP and both will even send it to you overseas, if you wish.

I've no idea how things work in the US but I recall once seeing this AAA link on another forum

http://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpf.html

which suggested that the same was possible in the US. Perhaps it's no longer possible. Question

As for Korean rental companies that would take a newly acquired licence - well, I know the Kumho Rent-a-car (now called KT Kumho) didn't accept a new licence. I've heard the same for Hertz. Not sure which ones would be ok, but I've heard of quite a few people using smaller rental companies and a new licence not being a problem, so they're certainly out there.

Try a Naver or Daum search for rental companies and call them to ask in Korean (or get someone else to), to maximise your chances of avoiding a misunderstanding, whether or not it's possible to rent with a newly acquired Korean licence. If it's ok and you're happy with the price, it might be an idea to try and make the booking there and then, including giving the licence details, and getting written confirmation to make as damn sure as you can that it really IS ok. I could well envisage a situation where you call a rental company who tell you over the phone that's it's no problem, and then you arrive in their office in Jeju for someone else to say 'sorry, we don't rent to new licence holders'. There's not much worse on a planned driving trip than arriving to find you can't have a car.

That's interesting about the IDP. I had read it wasn't possible in several places, but looking at that link, it seems like it might be doable. I'll keep looking into it.

I can totally imagine the situation you described as well. I'm gonna be sure to get confirmation ahead of time when/if the time comes. Hopefully it won't be too hard to find a company that will rent to me.

For now, though, I guess I'm gonna look into the IDP option a little more.

Thanks again!
